Several activities held from March 4-8 highlighted the celebration of the Department of Communication’s 50th year and its Communication Week titled Breakthrough. The week-long celebrations kicked off with an exhibit opening at the SMT Foyer attended by Miriam College President Dr. Rosario O. Lapus, selected Communication students, faculty, and staff.
Comm and Watch, a movie marathon from the films of Communication alumnae prepared by MCinema was held the next day. The movies featured were “Ang Tanging Ina” and “Feng Shui” two box office movies produced Tess V. Fuentes; and “Amok” and “Posas”, both from Cinemalaya Film Festival by independent film producer Krisma Fajardo.
The annual Patok na Patalks was held on March 6 with Communication alumni representing different fields as speakers. Guests were Stan Castillo and Vanya Peralta for events management, Camille Abadicio for broadcast, Pau Guevarra for photography, Filemon Elefante for journalism, and Kim Subido for advertising. March 7 was devoted for COMMpete, a series of on-the-spot contests for digital photography, digital poster making, essay writing, and digital filmmaking. The contestants were given the entire day to work on their entries which were later judged by Nancy Concepcion and Mae Ann Chua for filmmaking; Romille Alberto and Rian Hernandez for poster making; Robert Fontanilla and Arie Roque for photography; and JB Bolaños and Rian Hernandez for essay writing. Lucilen Regodon served as the head of the event. Winners per category received a cash prize of Php3,000 sponsored by VirtuallyIncredible.
As a culminating activity last March 8, the department invited Senator Orly Mercado, former chairperson of the Department of Communication, to share his experience as a media practitioner and how it helped him get to where he is now. He also imparted words of wisdom to the young students on how to succeed in the real world. The celebration closed with a special salo-salo with students, administrators and faculty who all contributed to make the event a success.
