In our final night of our Fright Favorites is THE FOUR SKULLS OF JONATHAN DRAKE (‘59) with Paul Wexler. #LetsMovie
Legitimate linguists: There was a Middle High German (MHG) dialect thoroughly infused with Hebrew and Aramaic words, and it evolved into all the various dialects of modern Yiddish. We have reconstructed its vowel and consonant inventory and shown how these inventories, through regular sound changes, became Western and Eastern Yiddish along with their various phonologies. There is debate as to where this MHG dialect was spoken, whether it was in the Rhineland (favored by earlier linguists) or Bavaria/Austria (favored by modern linguists), although the latter looks much more likely in light of a number of grammatical features of the language. At some point both dialects were influenced by Slavic languages, likely as the Cnaanic (Slavic-speaking Jewish) community was absorbed into the Ashkenazi community and ceased to be considered separate, but Eastern Yiddish was influenced far more by Slavic.
Paul Wexler: There was a Slavic-Iranian confederation living in present-day Turkey, part of the Khazars, that converted to Judaism and spoke a variant of Sorbian that was actually just a relexified Turkic language which was itself a relexified Iranian language, and they added a bunch of Hebrew and Aramaic words to their relexified languages in order to gain an advantage in trade, and then as they moved West after the collapse of the Khazar Khaganate, they relexified their Sorbian-Turkic-Iranian language with Western Yiddish (French relexified as German) words, creating Eastern Yiddish. This was then relexified into Modern Hebrew and Esperanto, thus both are actually Iranian languages relexified as Turkic relexified as Slavic relexified as Germanic relexified as what they are now. Also, Ladino is relexified Berber. Anyone who disagrees with me is a Judeo-chauvinist. I am very smart.
A certain kind of "leftist": Wexler is the only one of these two who isn't full of shit
