after playing DQIX i feel like we kind of got shafted in later games... e.g. what if XI and the remakes of I-III and VII had grottos? what if III had Champion, Paladin and Armamentalist classes accessible through new sidequests? what if VII Reimagined didn't just have the Dragon Lord, Hargon and Zoma as DLC but all of the "Legacy Bosses"? wouldn't it be cool if VII Reimagined had something like the permanent stat bonuses you get for mastering classes to a certain point in IX? why haven't Metal Medleys shown up again? why no online features in DQXI? so much cool new stuff in DQIX that didn't stick

Reform and Conservative synagogues should require students in their religious schools to attend services on Shabbat. It can be a special child-oriented service, but if kids aren’t attending Shabbat services, aren’t participating in the sanctification/separation of Shabbat, they’ll never think of Saturday as any different than Sunday. Services during Sunday/Tuesday/Wednesday/etc classes isn’t enough because, even if they’re learning the prayers, they’re not participating in the tradition of keeping the Sabbath holy.

my entirely subjective ranking of the Dragon Quest main villains, the maōs etc., excluding whoever the villain of X is

1. Psaro: the most nuanced villain, driven by a justified hatred of humans

2. Corvus: the second most nuanced villain, driven mad by the trauma of centuries of imprisonment

3. Mordegon: it falls off steeply here, but Mordegon was also a fallen hero like Corvus, albeit not for as understandable a reason

4. Dragon Lord: even in the original games, the fact that he offers to let you split the kingdom with him gave him more characterization than any NES Final Fantasy villain. if you're talking HD-2D, he's above Mordegon

5. Nimzo (Mildrath): just a real bastard this guy, but not for any reason, so i put him lower

6. Orgodemir: literally Satan, not very well characterized, but his plot to seal away the world was pretty ingenious

7. Zoma: i love the twist where he's revealed, and how he keeps Alefgard in darkness... but he's less three dimensional than the Dragon Lord

8. Hargon: he'd be much higher if we were talking HD-2D. even in the original, the fact that he yells at you for disturbing him is pretty iconic

9. Mortamor (Deathtamoor): a Big Bad you learn about after fighting his underlings for a long time, with a similar plot to Ogrodemir, but even less characterized

10. Rhapthorne: it's pretty cool he lives inside an evil sceptor and possesses various people at different times, but he gets zero characterization

my entirely subjective ranking of the main series dragon quests (excluding X), now that I've almost beat DQIX's main story (just freed Corvus):

1. V: just the perfect dragon quest game, it has everything

2. III: one of the most replayable DQ games, just really solid, great plot twist at the end

3. IX: the III of 3D Dragon Quest

4. XI: this game is so good that it's a bit misleading to put it in fourth, but i love the othrt games just that much

5. IV: groundbreaking, the inspiration for Octopath Traveler, most nuanced villain in the series (though Corvus is also up there)

6. VII: puts a really innovative twist on classic DQ world exploring, great job system, great characters

7. VIII: a really solid game with good characters, but suffers from prioritizing the jump to 3D over gameplay

8. VI: has a lot of the great gameplay features of V and VII but suffers from a story, characters and villain that aren't too interesting

9. II: the HD-2D remake surpasses that of III, but the original game was frustratingly hard and didn't live up to its potential

10. I: it's hard to be the first at anything and still hold up decades later. that said, it's still a pretty fun game to play. no DQ game is bad.

Performative disgust for Ashkenazi food is antisemitic. Yes, even if the person saying it is also Jewish (Ashkenazi or otherwise), it's still antisemitic. It also has strong classist overtones when you consider that many of the popularly mocked food items are products of people trying to use less desirable parts of an animal so as not to be wasteful. I'm not saying you have to like everything, but you also can't say the entire cuisine of my ancestors is the most disgusting thing ever.

Also when Ashkenazi Jews do the performative disgust it reads as extremely "I'm not like other Jews" pick-me.

I would never tell Orthodox Jews what Halacha should be, but that needs to go both ways. Orthodox Jews do not get dictate what a "real" conversion is outside of their OWN Orthodox community. I fully accept that I would have to reconvert Orthodox if I ever wanted to attend an Orthodox shul or be accepted in an Orthodox community, and I don't expect to be counted in an Orthodox Minyan or use an Orthodox mikveh or anything like that, but it's really hurtful when I get told I'm not a "real Jew" because I converted Reform. I am a real Jew. I am not an Orthodox Jew. Those are not synonyms. Orthodoxy is not the only way to be a Jew, and that includes converts. Period.
