While sometimes it's unavoidable that toddlers or preschoolers won't sit still for stories that are longer or don't have jolly rhyming cadences, I sometimes bemoan the recent trend of almost ALL picture books for preschoolers being kept to less than 500 words. I really believe that there was a happy medium years ago, with stories that weren't necessarily text-heavy, but were a little longer and more fully realised, and still appealing to the 3-to-5-year-old set. The Anatole books by Eve Titus are a wonderful example of this, and "Anatole and The Cat" (1957), for which illustrator Paul Galdone won a Caldecott Honour, is one of my favourites. It tells the story of cheese connoisseur Anatole the mouse, who one day encounters a cat at his job in the cheese factory, and is faced with the challenge of either revealing himself, giving up his hard-won job, or figuring out what to do about this new challenge!
