Verdun Memorial

The Battle of Verdun began 103 years ago this week.

Dedicated to the over 800,000 casualties, the Verdun Memorial was considered during the 1930′s but construction was delayed by the Second World War. The project was relaunched in 1959 with the memorial site chosen by veterans of the war. The memorial is located where the  Fleury-devant-Douaumont village station was originally located. This village, and numerous others, had been completely destroyed during the war.

Inaugurated in 1967, the memorial was originally designed to honor the French soldiers and civilians lost and injured in the battle. Renovated between 2012-16, the memorial now serves a new goal: a shared French-German memory of the battle and war.

Two quotes are inscribed on either side of the building (translated):

All came to Verdun as if to receive some supreme consecration there, and they seem to have ascended by the sacred Way for an exemplary offertory at the most formidable altar that the man had ever raised. - Paul Valery, poet

This memorial was edified by the survivors of Verdun in memory of their comrades’ graves in the battle for those who will come to collect and meditate at the same places of their sacrifice include the ideal and the faith that inspired and supported them. - Maurice Genevoix, author and veteran of the war

It was a cold and rainy morning when I visited the memorial. The walkway in front looks like glass as it was covered with ice from the freezing rain. I slipped and nearly fell numerous times.
