I Support Black Girls in Dance
In my previous post, there was a video of dancers from Miami Northwestern Senior High (a high school with a historic arts magnet program and strong dance program) in costumes that were influenced by Kitana, an iconic character from the video game Mortal Kombat. The costumes were in the aesthetic of Kitana, chosen by their director, Mrs Traci Young-Byron, and considered a very successful homage of the video game character. However, there was noted opposition to the costumes because of the connotation of seeing too provocative for high school students. If you are at all familiar with this tumblr, you know that Traci Young-Byron has been and always will be one of the biggest influences of my professional life. If you’re not too familiar, check the hashtags. I talk about her often. Having had the opportunity to be educated by her and observe her methodology, I understand and appreciate her artistry. These young women were not being provocative or too suggestive - they were performing well rehearsed choreography and simply being dancers. What has happened is that unversed adults are sexualizing young women instead of presenting the conversation of how not enough is done to protect young Black girls from being disrespected.
I went to HS with this guy. I remember his face so well. He was always smiling. We were students of PAVAC (Performing And Visual Art Center) and while I took a love of Visual Art, He took Dance. I didn't know him but i remember he was always smiling. RIP Trenard Mobley.
