Pawscouts; they’re amazing
Okay, listen up! Have you heard of the Pawscout?
It’s a small tag that goes on the collar of you car or dog, and acts like a GPS tag, but is so much better (link with freebie on the bottom).
How it works (from the website)
Know where your pet is at all times
Radar-style honing uses your phone to locate your pet within a 200-foot radius. A map shows his last known location. You can even set up a virtual leash and receive notifications if your pet strays.
Build a community of pet protectors
Invite friends, family, neighbors, dog walkers and pet sitters to install the free app to help protect your pet. You will be able to see your pet in relation to any invited Guardian at any time.
Create a detailed pet profile
A Pawscout Pet Finder is so much more than a traditional dog tag. A digital profile with a photo of your pet and info on special needs, dietary restrictions and any medications tells Pet Rescuers how to identify and care for your pet until he’s back home with you.
Send out a digital “lost dog” flyer
If the worst ever happens and your pet goes missing, send out a digital SOS and have the community searching for your pet the moment you notice he’s on the loose. Pawscout Pet Finder is the next-generation, community-supported way to find lost pets and reunite them with their families.
Here’s why you should buy one, and why I’m buying one:
They cost very little! It’s only $29.95 USD for life. There are no monthly, or yearly subscription fees.
They’re the size of a normal tag! Only 1.5"×1.9"×.4", as opposed to generic GPS tags, which are ~3.8"×1.3″×1.4″. They’re also a lot lighter: 10 grams as opposed to ~35 grams.
Battery life. Pawscout batteries last 12 months on a single charge. Awesome or what? They use standard watch batteries, no need to lug a charger around for a special battery (my camera requires special batteries, and let me tell you, it is a pain).
Practicality. These nifty little buggers have 3 mounts, and a D-ring for easy attachment. They’re also friggin’ WATERPROOF.
Style: In addition to the Pawscout itself, you can purchase laser-etched, scratch resistant nameplates. The cool thing about this being an add-on is that you can update your address without having to replace the tag.
Summary: $29.95 for life, waterproof, replaceable batteries, size of regular pet tag, and multiple styles and colours.

*whew* Okay, I know I sound like a sell-out, but I am not being paid to promote this. This is just a cool thing @servicek9s mentioned to me. I’ve been looking for a tag for a while, but GPS tags are too bulky and expensive (I mean, $45-$75 for the tag, and then $10-$20 a month? I’m a student, I don’t have that kind of money!)
A word of warning, though. This tag is mainly for urban environments, not really for hiking in the wilderness. Remember, it works off your phone/the phones of others with the app. Keep that in mind before deciding to only take this on a massive hike through the mountains.
