Aur Kya - Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani
Ramblings of a demented @iamsrk fan- Baroque Belles & Bollywood
Saturday 15th June
My son Rick asked if I would accompany him to a concert in York which had been cancelled previously for some obscure reason of which we never found out.
When I say that he aked if I would accompany him, what he really meant was, would I take him to York so that he could hear the concert. LOL
But, any excuse for a trip to York, one of my favourite cities. No, strike that, my favourite city!
The concert was by a group of ladies called the 'Baroque Belles'. Or I should say a Trio of ladies.
Rick knows one of them from the time he spent at Durham University, which is how he came to know about the concert.
So, off to York we went, except it wasn't me driving but my aunt, as my daughter needed my car to get to work and back. One day she may be able to afford her own car.
It seems a while since I was in York last, or at least at York Minster. The Minster has been under restoration for a number of years and various parts of it have been revealed in it's former glory.
Here are just a few images of how it looks now. Wherever you stand, you can never get the whole of it in one frame, so this was the best I could do in a short time.
The concert took place at St. Michael le Belfrey, a church close by to the Minster and one which my sister-in-law got married in.
As you can see from the posters, it was a lunchtime concert. Strange time to have a concert as it left us wondering what to do for lunch.
Too early to have lunch before and too late to have lunch afterwards.
We did a little shopping first and my aunts had a cup of tea while waiting for me and Rick to join them at the church.
Proximity of the church to the Minster.
Here is the inside of the church
The concert consisted of three ladies playing Baroque music via the Recorder, Cello and their voices. It was a very nice concert, but I did find myself drifting off to sleep at one point. Only because I have had too many late nights and not because of the music!
The music consisited of pieces by Bach, Handel,Telemann, Monteverdi, Purcell etc. and lasted only one hour. ( I do like other music as well as Bollywood)
Tea, coffee and cake was served afterwards and as i hadn't eaten since early that morning, I was tempted to a piece of chocolate cake (which I shouldn't have eaten as I am wheat intollerant!). Surprising how good a piece of chocolate cake can taste when you haven't had any for ages.
This didn't spoil my appetite, as after a little more shopping and dodging of showers, we stopped at the 'Hogroast' shop for something else to eat. This shop sells handcarved meats, which are locally sourced and a variety of potatoes, vegetables and sauces and is very scrumptious.
Those of you who have followed my previous blogs will know that York is full of old buildings, a lot of which date to Tudor times. Here are some below.
A popular place to have tea. Betty's Tea Rooms. There is always a queue to get in and I have only visited twice in my lifetime so far.
In the main square there is usually some form of entertaiment at weekends. This time it was a group of Scottish Bagpipers.
The Purple Man. This is a man dressed up to look like a statue and he does a very good job of it too. Often frightening people who pass by, by suddenly 'coming to life'.
We saw an exhibition which claimed to be International Art and decided to visit it as it sounded interesting.
However, it turned out to be works of art based on the persecution of people who practised the art of Falun Gong or Falun Dafa, a spiritual discipline of meditation, exercise and philosophy.
It was quite harrowing to look at for my aunts and we didn't stay long.
While the others were browsing in 'Marks & Spencer', I went back to 'East' clothing shop to try on a dress I had seen earlier that I liked. They didn't have my size unfortunately, but I managed to squeeze into the next size down and liked it so much that I ordered one in the correct size.
I have since received the dress. It only took a day to be delivered, and here I am wearing it!
A little Bollywood in style, or what I might class a 'Indian Summer'.
I love it so much, that I can see that it's going to be a favourite. Just need somewhere to go to wear it now.
On the way back to the car, my son had to stop off at this shop and pub for some beer to take to his Dad for Father's Day.
I think the title says it all. LOL
It has a wide range of beers from all over the world and serves meals of soup, sausage and stew, all with beer as an ingredient!
As well as entertainment, there is usually a street musician or two playing on some corner or other. I rather liked one of them and wish I had bought a copy of his CD like the people in the short video clip below:

Maybe I will catch him next time I visit.
What would a Saturday be like without rounding it off with a Shah Rukh Khan movie?
Boring? Unexciting? Dull?
So, we livened it up with the next one on our list, PBDHH or to the uninitiated 'Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hundustani' or 'Yet the heart is still Indian' in English.
I am not going to talk in length about this movie, as I started this blog nearly a week ago and still haven't finished it. I have had no time and I need to allow myself time to do the next one LOL
.
Sufficient to say that it is all about Ajay & Ria, who work for rival TV news chanels and get involved in a conspiracy by the government who have accused Mohan Joshi of being a terrorist. Mohan shoots the minister after recognising him as the man who had raped his daughter when she went to work for him.
After haggling over who is 'The Best', Ajay & Ria join forces to save Mohan from being hanged as a terrorist.
Of course we all know who is the best, Ha ha!
Even at doing Elvis impersonations!
Juhi Chawla is lovely as usual, but a little weak in this role.
Johnny Lever, however was his hilarious best as the Don
Great songs and dream sequences
and not forgetting some SPB (see previous blog)
and a good bit of flag waving and country supporting- and there you have it :D
Now to mention the other film that I managed to squeeze in over the weekend. Wouldn't normally watch one on Sundays, but seing as I was taking a day off on Monday, I made an exception.
This time it was Josh
Ranked amongst my favourites, Josh translates to English as 'Frenzy'.
A kind of Bollywood version of 'West Side Story', with rival gangs, illicit love affairs, shady pasts and accidental death. Or 'Romeo and Juliet' with 'Happy Endings'!
SRK looking good in a bandana as Max
Of course the question of whether SRK really likes cats or not arises in both PBDHH and this movie. In PBDHH he rescues a cat from the exploding building at the beginning. Here he is seen picking up the cat 'Maggie' from the cupboard where Shilrey (Max's sister) has hidden Rahul (Shirley's secret boyfriend).
Not sure how comfortable either of them look here, but I'm sure that SRK doesn't hate cats. He'll have to answer to me if he does, Right?
My friend and I did ponder over why Shah Rukh didn't chose the role of hero/ romantic part in this movie. However, the film just wouldn't have worked in any other way. He plays Max to perfection. Who else could act the part as well as him? No one else has the passion and dedication that he does.
Max, just about to be stabbed by Rahul's brother Prakesh
Here is Max feeling sorry for what he has done
.and a very contrite Max in prison after being beaten up by police after being accused of killing Prakesh, complete with SPB and SPB (aka Blood and Bruises)
and an unbelieving Max in the courtroom when Rahul defends him
I can't finish with this movie without mentioning Men and Bikes! SRK & Bikes in particular!
Here is Shah Rukh, sexiness personified!
topped with classic arm-stretch pose, what more could a woman want?....
......apart from the man himself! Big grin! :D
Until next time SRKians.....
I'm going to get a cold shower LOL
