Pirates and PC Gaming
Are pirates ruining PC gaming? Let’s look up the facts before reaching our conclusion. Fact #1: Even if pirates roam the earth, most (if not all) good products receive a good amount of money, even games like Game Dev Tycoon and their devs which had been really rusty about pirates and receiving low purchases back in 2013, but now has over 16,000 reviews on steam and a crapton of buyers. Fact #2: Piracy is illegal in quite a few areas around the world, and no matter how you think of it, you can’t really justify piracy as a good act. Sure, I pirate games, and maybe even you do, but most people (like me) do it for a reason. I don’t have a lot of money, I’m still in high school, and I don’t really beg my parents for money a lot. But still, that doesn’t mean that piracy is a good thing. Fact #3: Most people think that if you pirate games, that means you don’t actually buy games. This is wrong. Even though I pirate games, I have over 60 games on my steam library, and from around 2 months I bought crosscode simply because I wanted to support the devs in early access, even though the game isn’t worth buying for now. Fact #4: Piracy isn’t literally stealing, I know you’ve heard this time and time again where pirates try to defend themselves, I go back to my statement where you can’t justify piracy except if you have a valid reason (which still doesn’t mean piracy is good, just that you’re not necessarily a bad guy), but hey, these guys have a point. You aren’t literally harming or ruining someone’s lives by creating a copy of their work. Some people even pirate games that they might want to play, but will never buy it in the future due to a high price.
Keeping all of these facts in mind, what’s our conclusion? Well, I’ve talked about most of my points in these facts, keeping those in mind, this doesn’t mean I’m defending pirates, nor am I saying pirates are bad people, just that some have their reason and others don’t. Once again, while piracy isn’t literally stealing, this doesn’t mean it hurts the market overall, you might pirate a game that you’re tempted to buy later on when or if you get money, but then decide not to because you’ve already pirated. Overall, pirates will always be here, and so will buyers, and so will people who are defending pirating, and so will people who are trying to stop pirating. PC gaming won’t die because of pirates, it’ll just deal with the decreased amount of customers. Even if pirates exist, tons of indie game devs earned way more money than they would have expected otherwise. Pirates will simply live on, and I will continue to pirate, devs will continue to earn money, and almost everyone on both sides will be satisfied. A probably happy ending, if you ask me.
