Getting Smart About Keeping Cooling Cost Down: WiFi Thermostats
When the heat soars, cooling costs also rise. Adjusting a thermostat just 7 to 10 degrees from its normal setting for 8 hours daily can save as much as 10 percent annually on your energy costs, reports Energy.gov. Programmable WiFi thermostats make adjusting for energy savings easy. A programmable WiFi thermostat allows effortless management of energy consumption by controlling both cooling and heating from your smartphone, computer or other connected device.
Programmable Thermostat Basics
A basic programmable thermostat eliminates the hassle of having to manually adjust the home’s comfort levels several times daily. You can store multiple temperature settings, repeat daily settings and easily override any program when additional adjustments are needed. With a programmable thermostat, you can have your air conditioning run less during the day while everyone is gone and then set it to kick on about 30 minutes before you normally return home.
Benefits of WiFi Thermostats
One of the greatest benefits of a WiFi thermostat is the ability to manage your central HVAC system remotely. When plans change and you’re returning home earlier than usual, simply adjust the temperature settings from your smartphone and enjoy stepping into a perfectly cooled home even when the outdoor thermometer reads 98 degrees.
Remote access for the WiFi thermostat is via the Web or mobile apps designed specifically for your thermostat. Mobile apps are available for both Apple and Android devices. There are several options for WiFi thermostats including units from Honeywell and Nest.
Tip: Look for WiFi thermostats compatible with your home’s energy source. Some work with gas or electric while others may be used with any source.
Honeywell WiFi Thermostats
Honeywell offers different wireless thermostat options, each designed to make your life a bit easier. The Honeywell models allow you to program it directly at the wall unit as well as through the Web portal and mobile apps. A touchscreen feature makes it simple to program adjustments as well as choose display color themes for easy readability and to complement the room’s décor.
Smart Response technology from Honeywell provides security settings to prevent unauthorized changes, email alerts and specialty programming for vacations. It’s a good choice if there’s a need to monitor multiple locations such as rental units or offices as Honeywell models can be programmed for more than two locations.
The Nest WiFi Thermostats
What if you don’t have central HVAC? Consider a WiFi air conditioner timer or adapter that allows you to control a window air conditioning unit from a smartphone or other mobile device. You can turn the unit on remotely or adjust the temperature controls as desired.

Punk Rock Comedy Show
Hosted my first comedy show with my buddy Joe Stanton last night, which was a big deal for me, because it was the first show (of any kind) that I've been completely responsible for. Joe's done a whole bunch more, so I was definitely the rook. We've been talking a lot lately about doing our comedy in the punk rock lo-fi aesthetic, namely getting the job done on no budget, any way you can. We've applied this to shows, video production, and basically anything that usually requires spending money on equipment, people, or space. Last night was a true punk rock moment. The bar we were performing at didn't have its own sound system with a mic, but the manager knew a guy who hosts his own standup show with equipment for us to borrow. I got to the bar 2 hours before the show to start setting up, only to find that the manager, Simon, wasn't there, and the upstairs, our space, was locked. And so drink #1. Joe showed up at T-minus 1 hour, and Simon came a few minutes after. We went upstairs and saw two giant speakers and a microphone. But no wires. Of any sort. Joe and I went through everything in the filthy upstairs area, which I swear gets cleaned about as much as a janitor's closet. Simon kept saying he would text "your man Jermaine" (he's Irish), but then kept leaving voicemails. I don't know if he knows what "texting" actually is.
Half an hour to the show, Joe and I make an executive decision to run to Best Buy for some cords. I take a picture of the back of the speakers, and we try to grab an employee by the home theater department to help us. Here's something I learned: Best Buy employees can only be grabbed if they want to be grabbed, because it took forever to get someone. And then we found out we didn't need A/C cords for the speakers, but a mixer to run the whole thing. We started thinking of other options, but Best Buy literally had nothing. "You know, all those punk bands started out with their own shitty amps," Joe told me, "So we're actually more punk than them right now."
We were pretty much ready to go back and tell our performers they would have to do it without any amplification at all, when we spotted a PC Richards down the street. We figured they always have crappy sound stuff, like a karaoke machine or something, so we went in and asked the first guy we saw, Fidel. At this point, we had 12 minutes left to the show. They only had one cheap karaoke machine we could use, and it was a floor model. Without a power cord. They wanted to sell it to us for $50 when it sold new for $60.
"Seriously?" I said to Fidel. "Is there any way we can leave a deposit and just borrow it for an hour and then bring it back?"
Fidel called over his supervisor, Jason, and explained our problem. "Just pay us $25," he said.
"$25 to rent it? We don't even get to keep it?" I asked. Somewhere in my head a voice was screaming to just fucking pay the money and get the speakers, but I persisted. I blame my parents for this.
"No, you own it. Then bring it back after." Yes, they basically told us to buy it, keep the receipt, and then return it before 9:30 when the store closes. So we got back to the bar right at showtime with a karaoke machine that we plugged the mic into, and it had volume control, which was my biggest concern, and somehow we pulled it off. Then, right after the show, at 9:20, we left our friends who stayed to drink with us and ran it back to PC Richards, where we got our money back.
That's jamming econo.
P.S. I feel the need to put this down in writing, because I've never though it once in my entire life: PC Richards definitely hooked it up, while Best Buy failed miserably. Also, Fidel and Jason think Joe and I are hilarious.
