Here’s an awesome #nature #drawing by Peter Carrington {@pcillustration) of a bison who seems to have sprouted a mountain from its back. It reminds me a little of a double exposure photograph, where mountains are superimposed into the picture of a bison, but mostly it makes me think of mythological creatures and tales of folklore. There are stories that describe the world being supported on the back of a turtle. Likewise, Norse mythology tells of how the realms of existence are connected to each other by Yggdrasil, the World Tree. With examples like that already in canon of other belief structures, it would make sense that some peoples might think that mountain ranges could in fact be borne on the backs of bison… at least, it makes sense to me. Peter did an amazing job drawing and texturing the bison’s hide. It’s quite realistic to see some fur running lengthwise along the bison’s flanks, and the dense heavy mane growing in multiple directions. I especially like how the mane grows up into the foothills of the mountains, similar to how a treeline halts before the towering rock on real mountains. Also, while its white eyes are kind of haunting, I think it makes the creature appear more godlike, as if this is the god of bison or a heavenly beast that some North American Hercules equivalent would have had to pursue to collect some its hairy rocks as part of one of his Twelve Labors. Overall, this is quite an impressive piece, Peter!
