Rick and Morty exchange a glance. The boy looks puzzled, while the scientist is already starting to get annoyed, even if he is as clueless as his grandson. First, a shit ton of questions about Gems and now they are even getting random visitors? He has already too much shit to deal with, he doesn't have the time and, especially, the will to deal with Petal's pals.

Or whatever this Gem is supposed to be. She doesn't seem to have hostile intentions, quite the opposite, and thank fuck for that.

"Uh, m-maybe we do, or-or maybe we don't," Morty eventually answers, turning towards the Ruby with a tight, even if a little hesitant, frown. He won't tell her anything until he knows the reason why she is after his friend. Considering Petal's history with her species, better safe than sorry. "W-Why? Who are you? An-And what do you want with her?"

"I-In any case, she's not here," Rick cuts in, not bothering to show any patience, unlike the teen. "S-So if you have unfinished business with her o-or a grudge or...whatever, y-you can fuck off somewhere else."

    now there was a face she hadn’t seen.. since.. well.. before the war. being stuck on earth without the company of her fellow rose quartzes for thousands of years had been hard, and a part of her had.. never expected to see any of them again.. but to see not only a rose quartz but.. her matron...? rosie could only stare, speechless, feeling a tightness in her chest she couldn’t quite explain.

“My own pearl...” A slow laugh slowly escapes, before it turns to manic and giddy giggling, as the diamond, only just over a head taller than the other gem, scooped her up and swung her around like a doll.

“Well… I’m not a gem. Surely it’s different coming from a human, isn’t it?”

That… was a paper-thin argument, and Connie knew it; so she was almost glad when the pearl spoke up again, giving her a bit more to go on. Of course, the gem wasn’t exactly being any friendlier, but that was to be expected… she supposed.

Still, she had to wonder; what was a gem doing on Earth? If she called this crumbling ruin home, then the chances were she wasn’t with Homeworld, but that still left Connie with plenty of unanswered questions.

One, in particular, stood out; and before she even thought twice, Connie had asked, “Your friends? There are other gems here too?”

She caught herself a moment later. Whoever this gem (these gems?) was, she clearly valued her privacy, and that was all well and good–

Except for the fact that Steven and Pearl had already gone on inside, and quite possibly needed her help in dealing with whatever ancient gem tech they had to contend with to reach the dangerous relic that was supposed to be within. The dark girl frowned, contemplating how best to answer.

…of course, she could try to distract the pearl and run past her when she wasn’t looking, but… Connie had a feeling this wasn’t someone she wanted to make an enemy of, if she could help it.

She drew herself up straighter for a moment, hoping that matching the gem’s serious face would help her a little.

“Okay. I’m here with two of the Crystal Gems, defenders of the Earth. We don’t want to disturb you, but there’s a dangerous gem artefact within this place that we’re here to find and dispose of. I need to catch up with them so I can help.”

Morty blinked, looking slightly confused at the answer. Petal had encouraged him to approach the other pearl once the show had been over, and so he had...after waiting twenty good minutes for the crowd of admirers to dissipate. She was popular, it seemed, but it wasn't surprising. This was the first time he had seen her performed and he already felt a little starstruck.

"S-So you just...go around an-and entertain people? B-Because it's your assigned role?"

From what Petal had told him so far, he had assumed that all pearls had an owner, or at least someone they had to respond to. And yet that didn't seem to be the case of this particular Gem. Was she an exception to the rule? Or was it the norm in cases like hers?

He opened his mouth to ask, but he changed his mind before he could start the sentence. This wasn't his friend, nor someone he and Rick were helping, so he couldn't just start interrogating her.

So, instead, he cleared his throat and looked away, slightly embarrassed, before quickly turning to look in Petal's direction.

"Uh, y-yeah...I mean, no. S-She doesn't. S-She's on her own too," he blurted out, doing his best to make sense while still staying vague. He was sure that his friend wouldn't have appreciated it if he had gone around telling her story. "S-She's staying with us, o-on our planet, but she's not...w-we don't own her or anything. S-She's her own person. Uh, Gem."

Once the show had ended, Rick had left Morty and Petal to check the game corner of the club, while he had made a beeline for the bar. The place wasn't exactly cheap, but that night they were having their equivalent of a "happy hour" and he was hellbent on milking everything he could out of it.

His head tilted back with practised ease as he downed the contents of his last order. Normally he preferred sour liquors to sweet ones, but the spiciness of this particular ale added a great twist to the aftertaste.

When the pearl approached him, he had been about to raise an arm and flagged the bartender for a refill. Rick froze mid gesture, caught off guard for a split second, but the surprise was as quick to go as it had come and the next moment he was shooting the Gem one of his most charming smirks.

"C-Can't say that I-I'm into that kind of music, b-but the performer was quite enticing," he answered with a casual shrug, but he still pushed the stool next to his a little backwards, in a silent invitation. "Y-You got a great voice. G-Great moves too. An-And I'd know, I-I used to play on a stage to...f-fuckin' ages ago."

He had been half of the age he was now and he still had most of the hopes he had lost. The memories of those days were a little foggy, since the days when he hadn't been drunk or high or both were very, very few, but he still remembered the important parts.

The music, the cheering crowd, the adrenaline pumping in his system, the crazy parties and even craziest hook-ups. And then, the fighting, the thrill of the danger, the destruction, the smell of blood.

"S-So, what can I buy you? O-Or should I pick an-and surprise you?"

Classic Steven stood quietly, nodding in agreement. It was fair that it would ruin the surprise of who his magical destiny had in store for him in terms of romance. "Yea, I guess that makes sense.--"

It had only dawned on him that asking 'Does Steven end up with someone whos really nice and loves Steven for who Steven is' might have confused the love based psychic gem. she might have thought he was speaking in third person. When really he was trying to ask who fate had in store his elder adoptive full gem brother.

"Ah- ha, I mean I understand that it would spoil the surprise for me, if I was asking for myself, but I was more worried about my adoptive older full gem brother, who's also named Steven." He chuckled a bit a slight blush from embarrassment from the miscommunication. "That wouldn't really ruin any surprises if I know someone else's future love right?"
