“A part of me knows that, but another part of me feels like I haven’t done enough to help him.”  It was a conversation he had had with Winter, but no one more, simply because he didn’t trust them not to go and spill Tate’s private thoughts to Kai; He wasn’t sure why he trusted Joey the way that he did. He just did. He seemed so genuine, and empathetic to the youngest Anderson’s position.  “Kai’s always taken care of me, you know? I was really little when my dad got into that accident and it changed his entire personality. I didn’t know who he was after he got injured so I felt I lost my dad, and Kai was there to replace that role.”  Tate looked over at Joey, his thumb absently fiddling with the cigarette held between two fingers.  “And now I feel like I failed him when he’s needed me the most, and it’s too late to go back. I don’t know what to do other than... support him. Even though I think he’s going to end up doing something really terrible.”

she doesn’t look at her visitor — nor even at the (slowly dying) swarms of reporters outside the house. the crowd has begun to thin out since kai’s sentencing the day before. they know by now she won’t give a statement, won’t even leave her house to address the flashing lights and video cameras that beg to get in her face. they’ve trickled out towards the prison for their headlines. 

“i don’t feel tough,” balled hands shrug into the sleeves of dolores’s sweater; she wraps her arms around her frame loosely; “i just feel ... here,” what other choice is there but to keep going? she has a baby on the way ... a cat hiding somewhere around here. just because kai is gone, that doesn’t mean her life can come to a stop. 

for the first time since joey’s arrival, dolores meets his eyes — “but thank you. i’m trying ...” a weak smile is the best that she can offer.
