Hi! I have a question. When making gifs, how do you do the effect like in post/162670650829 where you cut out the character and change the background? Thanks :)

Hello!! I’m very sorry this reply took so long. Anyway, here’s how I cut bg using Photoshop! Let’s use this gif as an example:

1) Prepare your canvas. Add a new layer at the very bottom then select a color. I chose sky blue as the base and the gif above has 3 original layers.

2) Cut the background using Magic Wand/Magic Eraser and the Delete/Backspace button. I also use Rectangular Marquee for faster cutting. As you can see here, some of the bg were already cut, continue to do so until all of it is gone (see yellow highlight/red mark).

3) Repeat step 2 to all frames. Yep, all of it lmao I know, very tedious.

4) Add personal coloring to your gif and you’re done!! Here’s what the end product looks like :) Hope you understood my crappy explanation ; w ;

Besides the Venus flytraps, he’s also got what look like parasitic cordyceps growing on him, there’s what could be a zombie ant on his hand when he reaches for Makima, and while she’s feeding him the snail, there’s what looks like a jewel wasp on his head (which are notable for, after they sting a roach, leading said roach around by its own antenna like a leash). There’s so so much in that one tiny scene

There really is! I had seen these other ones mentioned before but not the Venus Flytrap (and I had never noticed them before). I am blown away by the amount of care and thought the animators put into the opening. You can really tell they understand the source material and are passionate about it and I just really love it it's so good. I feel like we could pick the whole opening apart second by second and still not catch all the symbolism there. So well done <3
