Michel Temer & PEC55 (W7)
Michel Temer, Brasil’s current unelected president is looking to pass a bill which will disenfranchise most of the Brasilian middle class. PEC55 is what this amendment is called and it will basically freeze Brasil’s federal budget for almost two decades at this 2016 level regardless of how much inflation there is. This means that with a population that continues to grow and age public spending on education, healthcare and social assistance will remain constant. This will lead to Brasil’s lower class growing and poverty rates growing through the roof. The Brasilian lower class has already been relying on an extremely thin welfare plan with a weak healthcare, education and a social security plan in place so with this bill even those will be basically taken away. In a nation already viewed as a poverty-stricken one, with crime running rampant throughout the country this would definitely be the tipping point for a very promising country. To make matters worse this bill is anti-democratic. Since Temer wasn’t elected but almost ushered into office so the people never voted on him and his severe economic policies. Another problem with this bill is that it pins the lower class against the wall because regardless of who they vote for over the next 20 years their situation won’t get better and the worst part last Tuesday it passed through the Senate which means it’s that closer to becoming an amendment. Like the woman you see above many Brasilians have been against this bill for those reasons and have been protesting in the streets. Unfortunately, many of these protests have turned violent.
