A short history of Peckham Library

Peckham Library was opened to the public of Peckham on 8 March 2000. That means it is 16 years old! 

The library was designed by a man called Will Alsop and it won the 2000 Stirling Award for architectural innovation (this means it is a very special building, that Peckham is proud to have!)

Peckham library is very busy! With nearly half a million visitors a year (that is 500,000 people! It is the busiest of Southwark's lending libraries and issued over 245,000 items in 2010/11.

The library was designed to be striking, to make people curious about what lies inside, and to challenge the traditional view of libraries as staid and serious environments.

We hope you enjoyed making prints of this striking building in the heart of Peckham!

Quick trip to Peckham, a district in south-east London, just to have a look at the local library. Is it weird? Maybe…but I’ve heard about this building at University and now that I live in London I thought that it deserved a visit, even because we are talking about a Stirling Prize winner (in 2000), the Oscar of British Architecture.

Author Juliet Samura signed copies of her new children’s book Animal Town at Peckham Library, writes Tayo Fatunla.

The Peckham resident was raised in Sierra Leone, where her parents were head teachers. Her brother was a lecturer at Fourah Bay College, the oldest university in west Africa.

Samura’s family home was in the Kono district in a wooded area of vast land, full of animals which the family reared and looked after. This setting inspired her to write Animal Town.

Sierra Leone emerged from a decade of civil war in 2002, and its universities have since played a major role in reintegrating former child soldiers back into society.

African storytelling contains much wisdom and Animal Town is no exception. In the book, Bongo the elephant, Salkey the Monkey and Lonto the dog live in a magical town where they all work together and accept others for who they are, no matter what their background.
