Hi hi! Just wanna tell you (if you didn't already know) that 10.29.15 is World Stroke Day!

Most of the time, you hear about strokes in older adults. But strokes can happen at any age! My little sister, who is fifteen years old and a freshman in high school, had a stroke in utero (while my mom was pregnant with her). We didn't know until she began to walk early, rather than crawl like a normal kid. She had a blood clot in her brain that caused a lot of damage to the right side of her brain. She has cerebral palsy, epilepsy, vision issues, and other learning disabilities. But oh my gosh, she is one of the most amazing kids. I've also met a lot of other kids who were victims of Pediatric Stroke through the Children's Hemiplegia and Stroke Association (CHASA). Some were babies when they had their strokes, others were toddlers, and some were even teenagers. so uh, my nephew* ...

is almost definitely going to have surgery to ... possibly remove half his brain. i mean a lot of it on the right side is already dead tissue, because he had a massive stroke, and the damage from the stroke is the reason he's having seizures all the time which can't be stopped by any medications

so what they intend to do is either "disconnect" or possibly even remove part or all of the right side of his brain

i'm not kidding, this is terrifying me.

i know there are lots of reasons to be optimistic and i know they wouldn't recommend it if they didn't think he could really benefit from it, but you know, it's fucking brain surgery, he's basically still a baby he's such a young small person

 so just ... if any of you are the praying type, i would be incredibly grateful if you would offer up prayers for Carter, or literally anything you would do in order for God to grant good fortune

Did you know an infant or child can have a stroke and have it go undiagnosed?

Mild strokes are an underdiagnosed problem, and a child who had a stroke may be misdiagnosed with Aspergers or other more common neurological disorders.

"Mild" strokes can cause ADD/ADHD, dyslexia (left hemisphere), NvLD (right hemisphere), poor coordination/fine motor skills, speech-language problems, memory problems, vision or hearing problems, anxiety, depression, and other maladies, so it’s of high importance that they are diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible. Physical therapy, cognitive therapy, and tutoring, as well as medications such as methylphenidate and SSRIs can be a part of a child’s treatment plan. Because certain parts of the brain will not regenerate, medication needs may be permanent, but therapy is often temporary.

How can a stroke go undiagnosed?

Strokes aren’t always dramatic events. Sometimes, symptoms are so subtle that practitioners or parents simply, as awful as it sounds, don’t notice. Strokes can be diagnosed later in life because they oftentimes leave behind lesions, or areas of scar tissue/tissue death, that are visible on a brain scan. Other events, such as perinatal ischemia, can cause similar lesions. Some people consider these events to be a form of stroke, but the vast majority of people consider them to be hypoxic brain injuries because there is no bleed or blood vessel block.

There needs to be more awareness for pediatric stroke and other forms of brain injury, such as perinatal ischemia, which is surprisingly common. If you or a loved one struggle with neurological symptoms that have been present as long as you can remember, it’s worth having a neuro-psych exam to determine if you have a neurological injury. And, if your child has any sudden neurological symptoms, no matter how mild they may appear, call 911. Time is brain.

Awareness is key. No child should have to face a brain injury alone.
