Alberto Henschel was a Brazilian photographer born in Berlin. He became a Photographer of the Imperial Household, a title that allowed him to photograph the daily life of the Brazilian monarchy during the reign of Pedro II. However, Henschel's most important contribution to the history of photography in Brazil are his portraits of Africans, slaves and freemen, distinguishing himself from other photographers because he tried to portray them freely and with dignity, as people and not as objects.
Marina Amaral, also Brazilian, has colored some of these portraits.
