My friend has been (slowly) working his way through death note (his first anime) (was mine too). He's just about to meet Near (he fell asleep) (seconds before L and Watari) and I just keep thinking, "Oh boy my good friend(s) queeredomens' favorite part is coming up!"
It's a peculiar switch in perspective as the common sentiment is that Death Note is not as good in the second half. I haven't watched it myself since you got back into it so I'm eagerly anticipating watching it with the newfound lens of someone who genuinely adores it
!!!!!!!!!!!!! This ask sparks joy thank you... I hope you have a good time with your rewatch!!! TwT (also your friend FALLING ASLEEP SECONDS BEFORE L AND WATARI??? Iconic xD)
Honestly I do understand the sentiment that "Death Note isn't as good in the second half" when someone's only experienced the anime because. When we rewatched the anime shortly after rereading the manga, it was really obvious to us that in trying to cram 5½ books in like a dozen episodes (when the first 6½ books got double that!!) there's so much that gets lost because the Death Note manga is such a dense, no-filler story to begin with.
Like, stuff in the second half of the anime gets rushed or straight-up dropped to the point it ends up feeling like you're watching a trailer at times!! Especially coming in from a first half that has way more Normal Pacing. Like in comparison, everything in the second half happens EXTREMELY FUCKING FAST!!!!
And so much of what Had To Go, because it wasn't absolutely essential to Tying Up Loose Plot Ends and/or would've required Too Much Exposition, is Establishing Those Brand New Characters/Antagonists And Their Debatably-Mutual Rivalry. Which is obviously THE bits of Death Note (2nd half) that we're absolutely frothing at the mouth over and so like... to me, anime Mello and Near aren't BAD (because they are still Recognisably My Blorbos and also the Japanese VAs are Excellentā¢). But if you don't already have the manga in mind as a reference, they still feel flatter and less compelling than their manga counterparts, because they don't get anywhere near as much space to breathe and shine!! Whether on their own or together!!!
And when your main antagonists are Not As Compelling as the previous antagonist, that kind of makes the story as a whole less compelling. (But for real the anime does them so dirty :( please read the manga for the full Mello/Near experience) So yeah tl;dr I kind of get it despite our being a Notable Second Half Of Death Note Enjoyers lol
HOWEVER. I am elated to know we have managed to be so enthusiastic about it that it's given you new perspective on the second half experience hehe >:3c (join ussssss)
