Peedie
peedie
adjective
Scottish (Orcadian)
little; small:
a schoolteacher much loved by all her peedie bairns
This is more or less what it says in The OED.
When I was peedie, living in Orkney, and I first heard the song "Fairytale of New York", I was taken aback about how this was the first non-Orcadian or Shetlandic folk song I'd heard which included the word peedie. It made the track special.
It was some time later that it dawned on me Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl were not singing about a small choir from New York, and peedie was actually PD.
Damn police, they broke the illusion. I went to school in Stenness, and we had the Stenness Peedie Folk - why not the NY Peedie Choir? Either small in number, or made up of small New Yorkers like the children of the Stenness Peedie Folk?
I discovered yesterday that some of my little sisters also thought this - I wonder how many children in Orkney still do?
You know..Peedie. I don't really think I can call people here friends..no matter how hard I'd like that. I'd much prefer if you were my only friend, you are the one who actually know's what I am and who I am. And we've known one another since we were younger.. -Jace glanced up to the little owl on his head. He wasn't listening, too busy watching a fly buzzing around, thinking of it like a midnight meal. -..You aren't doing justice to our friendship..- He huffed.
Resting his chin to the palm of his hand, Jace looked out the window from the library. There wasn't much people around and that always suited him better, being alone to think. For a guy who had an owl on his head, he didn't stand out at all among his peers.
Silence graced the rows of the library shelves. Peeling away from the window, he looked around once again to see if there were anyone near him. Nothing, of course. Sighing softly, Jace rested his face into his arms, Peedie adjusting to the sudden moment and moving to the back of his friend's head, hooting softly to him.
-..You are my little owl...you are my only friend..you make me happy..like sunshine end..-Jace hummed out the lullaby he'd sang to his owl when it was a baby, knowing there wasn't anyone around to hear him. He continued to hum, closing his eyes.
