To think of Peeta strapped down to a bed after everything he’d been through was almost too much for Effie to imagine. She’d seen holos of the sessions with him, courtesy of her captors before being rescued by District 13. What the Capitol did to poor, dear Peeta was etched in her mind far more deeply than what the Capitol had done to her. She could pretend what they did to her hadn’t happened, but watching--being forced to see her friends suffer was what kept her up at night.
“Tell us what you know and we will stop,” they’d said.
It didn’t matter that Effie knew nothing at all.
Here in 13, she rarely went anywhere alone, always accompanied by Haymitch, Katniss, or Plutarch--someone that knew her. The times she was forced to traverse the halls of this dungeon alone, she did so as quickly as possible, only going from point A to point B and back again as necessary. She could feel the stares of the people who thought she deserved more severe justice than she received. She knew many of them believed her unwelcome in this place.
She couldn’t say she blamed them, either. As much as she wanted to visit Peeta, she doubted she would be allowed to see him unchaperoned. And then Plutarch and Haymitch approached her one day with a theory.
“We believe it’s safe to start introducing familiar faces to him again,” Plutarch said, one arm crossed over his torso, his elbow propped in his hand.
Effie frowned, searching first his face, his fingers framing his mouth, and then Haymitch who stood there in a raggedy suit and overgrown stubble.
“Do you think I could help?” she asked, uncertain.
“Peeta was fond of you, Sweetheart,” Haymitch told her. “You two managed to get pretty close before. We can’t be sure, it could easily go badly, but I think it’d be good for him to see you. Probably good for both of you.”
Effie’s brows pinched, and she caught her lower lip between her teeth, worrying it thoughtfully for a moment as she took a deep breath. Finally, she stood, and her thin hand reached out to shakily grip Haymitch’s forearm with a nod.
“All right,” she agreed. “Whatever is best for Peeta. I’ll do whatever I can.”

Katniss sat beside Peeta in the bunker in Tigris’ home, listening to the commotion outside. If they just stayed put they’d be fine. His handcuffs stayed tightly wrapped around his wrists which only caused her stomach to churn in an painful manner. That pain was what was keeping him with her, it was the reason they were able to have a decent conversation without any concern that he was going to K I L L her.

yeah... I didn't have any trouble buying the jeans or the wallet, which are ironically the most feminine of all the items, but with the umbrella and the case... it's weird. It is a pretty homophobic/transphobic country I live in though, so *shrug*

It's excellent. I don't know if it's that well-written, or uses literary devices to great effect or whatever because I was too emotionally invested to analyse all of that, but it's definitely going in my Top 10 Books of all-time list.
And I want to read that one as well. I've already got Paper Towns and An Abundance of Catherines so it's pretty much the only one I'm missing.
