Ask Me Now! is an album by American jazz clarinetist Pee Wee Russell featuring trombonist Marshall Brown recorded in 1963 for the Impulse! label. Personnel: Pee Wee Russell – clarinet Marshall Brown – valve trombone, bass trumpet Russell George – double bass Ronnie Bedford – drums Reception. The AllMusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 5 stars and stated:”After a lifetime spent playing unusual and unpredictable clarinet solos in Dixieland settings, Russell late in life broke out of the stereotype and played in more modern settings. … It is a remarkable and very lyrical date that briefly rejuvenated the career of this veteran individualist.”

Pee Wee Russell – The Individualism Of Pee Wee Russell

In December 1950, Russell nearly died from the effects of years of excessive drinking and limited eating. By the time of the Boston engagement that resulted in this double LP, he was 90 percent recovered. Leading a strong sextet that boasted fine solos from trombonist Eph Resnick and the great young trumpeter Ruby Braff, Russell performs mostly veteran, Dixieland standards during these extended workouts, avoiding clichés and playing his typically unique ideas with spirit and enthusiasm (Scott Yanow/AllMusic).

Pee Wee Russell Sextet – Complete Live at Bovi’s Town Tavern (1964)

This edition presents the Pee Wee Russell Sextet’s complete 1964 performances at Bobi’s Town Tavern, in Rhode Island, for the first time ever on CD. Russell is showcased performing a standard traditional jazz program, but as was often the case, his solos are unique and not always related to the traditional style. Among the personnel, trombonist Porky Cohen also shines here. Cohen had played with Artie Shaw, Charlie Barnet, and Big Joe Turner, among others.
