Tysm for the tag @pegasusdrawnchariots ! 🩷
Motherthing by Ainslie Hogarth. It was about a woman being haunted by the ghost of her mother-in-law. The woman worked in an aged care home and had seemingly endless free time on shift, which I found much harder to believe than the ghost thing.
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson because it is my favourite book :)
3. A book I couldn't put down
Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka. It’s about the way the crimes of a man on death row affected various women in his life. In some chapters you get his POV (in second-person present tense) as he counts down the hours to his execution, but it’s largely focused (in third-person past tense) on the lives of his mother, his sister-in-law, and a female detective who works on the case. It was beautifully written and I don’t think I’ve ever read anything quite like it.
4. A book I've read twice or more
I don’t think I’ve ever reread a book actually? Too many new stories to discover! Actually I tell a lie, I reread Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion last year so that I could (finally) read the sequel, because it’s a quick read and I first read it in 2013. I think that's literally it though lol. I'm not generally a re-reader or re-watcher!
Coffin Moon by Keith Rosson. It’s set in the 70s and has vampires. That’s all I really (need to) know.
Honestly I don’t like to leave books unfinished cause I always push through hoping they’ll end up being worth it somehow…so I’ll say the most recent one I SHOULD have put down which was The Vegetarian by Han Kang. Just really wasn’t for me.
I really want to own a copy of Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu but I’m undecided on which cover I’d like!
8. A favourite book from childhood
I loved the Anne of Green Gables books by L.M. Montgomery. I also loved Heidi by Johanna Spyri which I remember absolutely nothing about except that it made me desperately want to live in the mountains.
9. A book I'd give to a friend
Probably Hungerstone by Kat Dunn. It’s a reimagining of Carmilla and it’s very Gothic, sapphic, fun + unhinged [insert Lucille Bluth “good for her” gif]. It was written in 2024 and I've never seen it stocked in any bookshops near me, but to my amazement I somehow found it in as-new condition at the free book swap a few months after I read it!
10. A book of poetry or lyrics that I own
My Life Had Stood a Loaded Gun by Emily Dickinson.
11. A non-fiction book that I own
Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Perez.
12. What I'm currently reading
The Kingdoms by Natasha Pulley, courtesy of @bakugeorge ! I'm very slow getting through it (apologies!) but enjoying it so very much.
13. What I'm planning on reading next
Soon by Lois Murphy. I saw it recommended in a horror lit group, and all I really know is that it’s rural Australian horror + it’s been compared to my favourite horror show (From) so I'm KEEN.
