Trying to salvage the unsalvageable: The Cubs in 2015
After failing miserably in my attempt to rebuild the Cubs in 2012, 2013 and 2014 I had finally reached the postseason. If Theo's plan takes this long I'm going to have to check in to a mental hospital. Anyway, after countless attempts to build something resembling a major league rotation I finally got something right.
The rotation was anchored by aging journeymen Francisco Liriano and Jair Jurrjens and held together with youngish, soon-to-be journeymen Brad Peacock, Robbie Erlin, Trevor May and already injured and now recovered first round semi-bust Waylon "Whiplash" Day.
Not to heap too much credit on these fellas because the strength of your 2015 Chicago Cubs is the offense. After the fizzling out of real-life deity Anthony Rizzo in 2013 and his eventual demotion, I went out and acquired Jesus Montero from the Mariners and taught him to play first base. The story of his acquisition is amusing. After the AL outlawed the DH (this happened automatically, not by my hand) in 2014 and the Mariners spent big FA money on both Russell Martin AND Mike Napoli (who moved to 1B) Jesus Montero was basically irrelevant to the Mariners' cause. It didn't take much to acquire him.
I also acquired Jose Reyes who was being shopped by the Marlins. His 22mm annual salary is a bit of an anchor but now that we're seeing success I'm hoping Old Man Ricketts will loosen up the purse strings again for next season. With an extremely formidable lineup including the now entrenched Brett Jackson (23 homers), waiver pickup of the century Carlos Peguero (.310, 42 HR, 108 RBI) and Montero (.300, 35 HR, 100 RBI) there was no doubt that the runs would come.
One of the biggest blows to the 2015 campaign was the injury to Starlin Castro. He blew out his knee in midsummer and would have to miss the entire season. This didn't phase me. I went out and picked up Will Middlebrooks who was available in a trade and he only tallied 25 homers and 100 RBI for the club.
In a major surprise, Josh Vitters, in limited duty, managed to blow away expectations. He ended up hitting 19 homers in very limited action. It's going to be very interesting to see how he is used next year.
Without Castro we managed to fight on toward a wild card spot which somehow turned into a run that put us neck and neck with the first place Cardinals in late September. We won on the final day of the season and did some scoreboard watching only to see that the Cardinals won as well sending us into a one game playoff.
Imagine that: a one game playoff to decide the NL Central crown vs. the St. Louis goddamn Cardinals. I would die. The game was at Wrigley Field and I threw Jurjjens out there vs. Adam Wainwright. Unfortunately, Jair had nothing and before I knew it it was 5-0 St. Louis.
The Cubs weren't going to get blanked on this day. We roared back to tie it up after a Middlebrooks grand slam in the sixth that sent Wainwright to the showers while the excellent bullpen kept the Cards' bats at bay. Tied at 5 and heading into the ninth I put our closer Justin De Fratus on the mound. He's been excellent all year but an RBI groundout gave the Cards the lead and we headed to the bottom of the ninth.
The Cards wheelbarrowed out their portly closer Joba Chamberlain now much older and much more entrenched in his alcoholism. Were this a real scenario I don't think it'd be possible to hate a player as much as him. The leadoff hitter grounded out. Adrian Cardenas who was a very sturdy second baseman all year ripped a double to right to give us hope. Brett Jackson grounded out to second while Cardenas scampered to third. That brought everyone's hero Carlos Peguero to the plate.
It can't be understated that this was a moment that everyone would remember for the rest of their lives. Peguero is the new Sammy Sosa without the roids (that we know of). Were Peguero to accomplish what he's done over the last three seasons as a Cub he would be revered as a god. You wouldn't be able to walk anywhere without seeing his shirsey. He'd be in half of the commercials on television. He's our very own Albert Pujols. And now he had the chance to give the Cubs their first division title since 2008 with one mighty swing.
A base hit would tie it. A home run would win it. Carlos Peguero measured up his opponent - the fat bastard Joba Chamberlain. They'd probably use this encounter in the opening montage of MLB: The Show 2016.
Carlos Peguero struck out swinging.
The Cubs weren't done yet but they just made it very difficult for themselves and would have to travel to Atlanta to take on the Braves in a one game Wild Card playoff showdown.
