Abbey is the person who perhaps most explicitly recognises how the MS storyline affects CJ more than the others on the staff and really shows some care about her when, as soon as she comes home from wherever she was when Leo told CJ, she’s waiting in CJ’s office and tells her explicitly that she wanted to BE there when CJ was told, and she’s sorry that she wasn’t. The fact that that is something Abbey is upset about? With her own medical license on the line, possible trials, the media storm they’re about to be hit by, how angry she still is with Jed, all of that going on, she’s still worried about CJ and regretful that she wasn’t there to make the news at least a little easier on CJ? Abbey Bartlet is a good and caring person and oh I love her so much for that moment. She really cares. She sees CJ. It’s just so good.

Ohhh a few!

I really want to write something Amy/Lou one day because I have a whole backstory concept in my head and never actually got around to writing something for them. Also Lou/Edie? On the Santos campaign?

I also love the idea of Andy/Matt and Andy/Helen and Andy/Helen/Matt and I have some prompts for it and I really want to write Anything for it really.

CJ/Kate is such a nice thought but I never really got Into it and I’d love to some day honestly?? Also CJ/Nancy partially because I remember distinctly being excited cause I thought I found a fic for them and then it turned out it was just Leo dreaming about watching CJ and Nancy fuck and. I have NO plans or ideas but I do desperately want to do better than that.

Also for non femslash ships: lowkey still wanna try Cliff/Leo and I can’t even explain where that came from but it is still on my mind as a Thing and I love that. Also, lowkey, I had this Andy/Charlie hook up idea months ago and?? That could be fun, honestly.

ok syn tell me about the women on the newsroom and why I should watch it

HELLO!!!!!

ok so. may i present to you, mackenzie “i’ve been exhausted since i was 30” mchale. she’s an incurable idealist. she chooses optimism because it’s the hard choice. she’s good at her job and knows it. she’s incredibly competent and that’s sexy as hell. she can be infuriatingly ridiculous sometimes. she’s a one-woman screwball comedy. she makes me feel like believing in things is worth something again. she’s constantly on the verge of losing it and that’s just how it is.

and then there’s sloan sabbith. actual autistic queen. can’t human for shit and the biggest heart you can fit in a person. the most correct person in the world. seriously, she has two phds and you really should listen to her. i don’t understand 90% of what she’s talking about when she puts on her economist hat but i would still listen to her for twelve hours straight.

the list of incredible female characters doesn’t stop here of course and all in all the show has a pretty well-rounded cast. (i just have shameless favourite character goggles.) overall, i think it has a pretty accurate and human reflection about certain gendered and racialised dynamics in a workplace (occasionally enacted through its own biases), even if it is not explicitly about that. it absolutely captures the kind of frenetic, determined energy in a newsroom and it’s exhilarating to watch.

there are parts of the show that frustrate me (enough that i still have a 700+ words rant in my drafts that will never see the light of day), and bits of it definitely don’t age as well, but on the whole it is one of the most politically refreshing pieces of mainstream american media i have ever watched. it feels frighteningly prophetic in its commentary on the direction that american politics was and has headed towards, which is ridiculous when you consider the fact that critics thought it was “too cynical” back when the show first came out. it is, at its core, about the integrity of the fourth estate amidst post-truth politics, and larger still, that of democracy in a time of increasing bipartisan polarisation. the writing is extremely clever. it’s funny as hell when it wants to be. it has become my new favourite comfort show, and the pilot is one of my favourite tv episodes period. i can’t recommend it enough, and really hope you’ll enjoy it if you do decide to give it a try!!!
