Hi :) Why do you like German as much as you like it? I just started learning it, because one of my friends is moving to Germany bc of her bf and I want to visit here there :)
There are so many reasons why I love German, I hope I didn’t leave anything out of this haha.
I like the way it sounds. People often think that German is harsh sounding. German doesn’t sound as harsh as people make it seem. Some nice sounding German words include Liebe, Katze, lila and many more. There are lots of examples of songs in German, including Disney songs, which show that German is a very pretty language.
I like how nouns are always capitalised in German. I think this is kind of an odd reason but for some reason seeing a capital in the middle of the sentence draws my attention and makes sure I don’t get distracted with whatever I’m reading. It also makes me aware of words which are nouns. I don’t really think about that in English so in fact it improves my English because I’m more aware of which words are nouns.
Continuing with the grammar theme, German grammar is so wild. I love the German cases a lot because they’re something that seems so difficult to you at first, but now I know what case to use automatically and I feel like I’ve accomplished something. Then there’s the prepositions and German seems to have a load of prepositions compared to English and it can be kind of confusing because you won’t know which prepositions take which case at first but once you learn them it seems so satisfying to me to know the right case straight away. There seems to be some sort of stereotype that languages with cases are ridiculously difficult but it just requires practice!
(I’M SO SORRY IF I’M MAKING GERMAN SOUND RIDICULOUSLY COMPLICATED oops)
I love German conjunctions so much. Word order stays the same with coordinating conjunctions but with subordinating conjunctions the verb goes to the end and I just find that really cool. I’m sure the word order probably annoys a lot of people but I find it a very unique word order compared to English.
German has really cool words. Kühlschrank is german for fridge. It is made up of two words. Kühl means cool and Schrank means cupboard. The literal meaning is cool cupboard. That’s just really cool, how could you not love German!
German also has so many words that we don’t have in English. One of my favourites is Fernweh which is a longing for far-off places or feeling homesick for a place you have never been to. That word describes how I feel about Germany haha
I’m going to finish this now because this is already super long but I think it’s super sweet that you are learning German because you want to visit your friend. I hope you have fun when you visit her in Germany and I hope you’ll fall in love with the German language like I have. <3
