An bhfuil Gaeilge agat? (This is my main blog, my new langblr is tapaighandeis)
Tá Gaeilge agam ach ní mé an-mhaith. Tá mé ábalta ag caint faoi dánta agus tá mé ábalta ag scríobh scéalta. Ar an drochuair, tá Gaeilge i scoileanna faoi fhoghlaim de ghlanmheabhair.
I even had to use a dictionary for three words oops. I can speak, read and write German significantly better than I can speak, read and write Irish. Even though I have been learning Irish for 11 years so far and German for three. I have three years of school left so I will have learned Irish for 14 years and German for six. I don’t hate Irish, I’m quite neutral to it sadly.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the passion for Irish and not many people here do. Irish education in schools is not great. In Irish class, we rote learn poems. We learn how to answer questions on the themes and characters in the poems. We learn summaries of stories. For our oral exams, we rote learn sentences and answers to say. We are so used to rote learning that it is hard for us to make up Irish on the spot and we are encouraged to rote learn because our grammar would not be good enough if we wrote it ourselves.
Our tenses are not properly taught. People seem to be decent at either present or past and then awful at the other and the future.
I could go talking about the Irish education system for a while but I’ll stop haha.
It’s lovely to see people outside of Ireland with such passion for the Irish language though! There are a lot of non-Irish people on Tumblr and it does make me want to try and learn Irish better sometimes haha
