Historic site of the week: Peñíscola Castle
Peniscola Castle is situated on a crag overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Arab writer Al-Idrisi described Baniskula in the 11th century AD,
Peñíscola Castle, perched on a rocky outcrop above the Mediterranean in Spain, dates back to Moorish times and was rebuilt by the Knights Templar between 1294–1307. Later modified by Antipope Benedict XIII as a papal residence (1417–1423), it saw further fortification in the 16th century. The castle played roles in various wars up to the 19th century. Restored in 1960 for the film El Cid, it’s now a major tourist attraction.
