A review of Penn & Teller's Desert Bus minigame by JerryTerrifying.

This game is... simultaneously the worst game ever and one of the best satirical statements ever. It's just beyond words how idiotic people are when they say that video games are too violent and have nothing to do with real life.

Context: Penn & Teller made this game as a Take That for Janet Reno, who said that video games have nothing to do with reality and are too violent.

With that in mind, the setting of the game is the following: You drive a bus from Tucson to Las Vegas. You can't go beyond 45mph, and the trip takes 8 hours. The game is carefully designed to suck out all the fun if you would be still interested enough to try it.

You can't cheat, because the bus is drifting off slowly to the right, so you need to correct the direction all the way. You can't pause, and can't do anything else. The game requires your full attention for 8 straight hours. The visuals are bland: just wast yellow desert as far as the eye can see. A real-life bus drive would be slightly more interesting than this per se, but that's part of the parody.

If your reach the end, after 8 hours of tedium, you'll get... one point. And the option to drive back to Tucson. It's just... cruel.

Oh, and if for nothing else, watch this video for the FMV in which Penn introduces the game. It's reeking with brilliance. The subtlety, the bluntness, the "you asked for it, now here it is" attitude. It's just hilarious. And it being and FMV, the pixelation and the obvious blue screen artifacts just add to the charm.

It's beyond words, how brilliant this whole thing is.
