October is ADHD awareness month! I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was ten years old. ADHD for me is both a strength and a struggle. I makes me really creative, energetic and fun. The want and need for stimuli makes me try new things and expand my horizons and mind. My impatience for small-talk makes me have thoughtful and deep conversations even with strangers and my interest in people, feelings and relationships is a good ground for meaningful relationships. The way my brain is wired makes me come up with different solutions and thought processes and people find me funny and fun to be with.
But having ADHD is hard! It’s hard to focus on things I need to do, I get so easily overwhelmed and stressed if I don’t plan everything into detail or if a plans changes, misunderstanding people is really easy because navigating social codes comes hard for me and just doing everyday tasks like brushing teeth, cooking food and cleaning takes so much more energy than for neuro-typical people. The difficulty of controlling emotions and impulses makes me difficult to deal with for both me and my close ones and is a ground for conflicts. My excess energy turns into anxiety if I don’t use it for something physical. When I try to tell people that I have ADHD I often get the ”ah don’t we all” or ”yeah I get so restless” or similar and it makes me sad when my struggles to even do things people take for granted makes me exhausted and people just see it as me being lazy. ADHD is not just being hyperactive, hyperactivity is the least of my problems.
That being said I would never trade having ADHD for anything! I urge you all to use October to learn a bit about ADHD! This day’s inktober goes out to all my ADHD-siblings, some of you are even pictured in it!
