From time to time Retirement Pulse receives mail from seniors wrestling with topics like government age pensions, seniors concession cards and senior health allowances that they do not quite understand. We agree the terms can be a little daunting. Today we decided to take time out to explain how they work.

  Although the working details of government age pensions vary between different countries, all agree that one must meet residency and age requirements. The former is to prevent foreigners arriving and expecting government age pensions right away. Almost everywhere, age qualifications for females and males are merging.

  Seniors concession cards allow us discounts on a wide range of goods and services. These range from transport, through medicine to consumer goods. Most of them are voluntary and not prescribed by law. Hence, it is necessary to approach each vendor directly, and apply for individual seniors concession cards in each instance.

  Seniors health allowances work differently again. While they are often rights enshrined by law, service providers may not know that you have a disability or chronic illness. Hence,it is necessary to claim seniors health allowances in person, and to have a doctor's certificate with you when you do.

It can be quite irritating to go through the same formalities so many times. That said, we would like to stress that government age pensions, seniors concession cards and senior health allowances are rights that we have earned as tax paying citizens.

  When we were younger, we supported the older generation with our contributions. As we approach older age, the baton changes hands. Now it is our turn to receive the same gifts of thanks with grace.
