Perceptions of Performance
Week 2
Monday 22nd April 2013 – Monday 29th April 2013
This week has been a major development for my Perceptions of Performance essay. My intention has always been to focus on Burlesque, as it’s an area of performance that is something that I am both passionate about and personally involved in. I also feel that it’s history and development is such an interesting area of research when combined with the moral dilemma of strip tease and the objectification of women. Despite my keen interest in the subject I have been struggling to refine my essay subject. I wanted to steer away from an essay simply about female empowerment as I feel that is a predictable take on this subject.
Inspiration came in an unusual form. I was given a ticket to Dream Boys as a present and this week attended the show. Dream Boys is an all male strip act. This was the first time that I’ve seen a male strip act, which was an unusual experience as I’ve been used to watching Burlesque which is a female dominated genre. Whilst watching the show I realised how strange it was to see nipples on stage. This is because, it’s a legal requirement that women in Burlesque have to cover their nipples with pasties for decency. However no such law exists for men and this got me asking questions.
Since the show, I’ve started to look into the laws surrounding stripping and adult entertainment and I’ve been finding this a fascinating area of research that I hope will help to inspire my essay.
