here's a snippet that's kind of the working prologue right now. emphasis on the "working" ahh.
General Summary: Dean and Cas have been inseparable since they were both 5. At age 10, Cas loses his eyesight in an accident. Dean is there to help him adjust to a life of darkness. Now at age 25, a year before their set wedding date, Cas is finally getting surgery and seeing Dean for the first time in 15 years. Most of the fic will focus on after the surgery.
Dean Winchester's eyes were the last sight he gripped onto before he blacked out that day so many years ago. A field of green and a darkness that lasted 15 years. So it makes sense that he is the first thing his new eyes gravitate to, years later.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Castiel Novak would insist to anyone that he knows what Dean looks like. Conceptually.
He has meticulously traced Dean with his fingertips too many times to count, sweeping over his features over and over, in fear that he will miss something. He knows every curve and line, the dip in his chin and the shape of his eyes. There is a library of Deans in his mind that he has built up over the years, going back over and over to the 10 year old boy he remembers and adding here and there, as the changes come. The first signs of stubble Dean proudly had him feel sophomore year of high school, the raised scar above his eyebrow left over from his bike accident freshman year of college. He knows his Dean, every bit of him.
So when the doctor tells him gently that they're removing his bandages now and he can slowly open his eyes when they say so, he is expecting a lot yes, but he thinks he has a handle the face he will see.
An "okay Castiel, you can open your eyes now" is whispered his ear and he obeys. First a blur of color and then achingly slow, bits and pieces coming together. A white room and there are a few people there, but his eyes gravitate towards his Dean. And there he is, standing in front of his bed, grinning so wide he could be the sun. And he is to put it simply, knocked off his feet. Every single sappy cliche flashes through Castiel's mind but none of them are enough.
He is so beautiful that nothing is enough. He is so breathtakingly beautiful that he eclipses everything.

imagine all the whispered conversations that would take place in the bunker, with Dean and Cas tucked comfortably against each other in Dean’s bed.
some nights they’re loud, when they’re insatiable and want nothing more than to feel every inch of each other. other nights they lie there in comfortable silence, hands intertwined under the covers, listening to each other breathe and the steady rhythm of their heartbeats chugging along together. but some rare nights they want to know, everything they never had time to learn in the harsh light of day.
so sometimes Cas whispers to Dean, a deep rumble against the shell of his ear, about watching humanity grow into what they are today and everything remarkable he has seen in between.
“the thing i remember the most about the early days of humanity is how absolutely determined you, or we, i should say now i suppose,…” a soft kiss brushed against Cas’s lips for comfort, for all he has lost,” mmph, Dean, i’m talking… how determined you were, these inept things who had no idea how to survive beyond what was instinctive but you were so beautifully determined.”
“we were a bunch of stubborn bastards from the beginning huh?”
“yes…” and so on.
other times, Cas wants to know about the Dean he never met.
“Dean?”
“hm?”
“do you remember your first date?”
a chuckle.
even the happier memories are laced with sorrow for Dean, especially when Cas goes that far back, but it all feels so far away, all the pain is but a faint memory with the solid form of cas pressed against his chest, anchoring him there.
they talk about anything and everything and nothing at all, growing to know the parts of the other that they never got to see.
fallen!cas not being used to the cold and it's a really tough winter that first year. the heater breaks in the bunker one day so he's in dean's room under like 5 blankets with just his head peeking out of the top. but when dean checks on him, he's still shivering so dean makes him strip and he does too and they both get under the blankets.
dean wraps his whole body around cas and forms a little cocoon of body heat for cas to burrow into, whispering i got you, angel, shh baby as cas slowly stops shivering. they stay like that all day, while sam works on getting the heater fixed, talking in whispers until cas falls asleep against dean's chest ;u;

He couldn't focus on anything for the rest of the day.
I'll pick you up at 8 was on a constant loop in his head and he found himself absentmindedly touching his lips. He could still almost feel Dean's lips on his, a phantom sensation that only left him aching for more.
Stop. He shook himself mentally. What the hell was he doing? This was Dean Winchester. The same Dean who had blown into town with his dad and little brother at the beginning of the year and had since seemed to have made it his personal mission to break as many hearts as humanly possible. He flirted, lead them on, fucked 'em, left 'em moved on to the next target.
That's how he worked and Cas was just in his line of vision for now. He knew that. He didn't even know why he had said yes. Maybe for a moment, when Dean had been sitting across from him in the cafeteria, he had glimpsed a glimmer of sincerity. His ever present smirk had fallen for a moment and Cas had glimpsed... something more. He didn't know what but it intrigued him.
The day went by in a blur and soon enough, he was driving home with Anna beside him asking if he was alright. As soon as he got home, he shut himself in his room, put on some Mozart loud enough to drown out his thoughts and tried to focus on anything except Dean fucking Winchester and his really soft lips.
At around 7:30 he came downstairs, dressed in his usual sweatshirt and jeans, feeling a lot more in control. Gabriel was in the kitchen, eating a whole bowl of gummy bears for god's sake.
"Where're you going, hotshot?" Gabriel said, through a mouthful of candy.
"Just out. With Dean." He mumbled the last part, hoping Gabriel would just drop it.
He paused midchew and raised an eyebrow at Cas."Dean Winchester? " Gabriel was a senior but he had heard al the rumors that had been circulating about Dean. "Hasn't he been bothering you for months. He finally got to ya?"
"No! I just thought if I went out with him he would stop bothering me." Cas shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. That was what he was doing. Mostly.
"Sure." Gabriel gave him an infuriating knowing smile."Just remind that punk that you have four brothers who would love the opportunity to kick some ass."
"I hardly think you need to protect my honor, Gabriel, I'm not some maiden. I can handle Dean Winchester." Cas said, annoyance bleeding into his voice.
Gabriel just laughed at him and went back to his gummy bears. Thankfully, no one else was home to interrogate him further. Gabriel was the most easygoing of his brothers. Cas spent the next half an hour fidgeting and second guessing himself until around 8 when the door bell rang, startling him out of his reverie.
Here goes nothing.
He opened the door to Dean standing there with his hands in the pockets of his leather jacket. As soon as he saw Cas, his face lit up, that sparkle back in his eyes and yeah, even he had go admit that was ridiculously endearing.
"How you doin', Cas. Ready to go?"
"Hello, Dean. Yeah, I'm good." Cas closed the door behind him and they walked over to where Dean had parked his Impala.
"So how does it feel to finally give in to the raging hard-on you have for me?" Dean turned towards him slightly as they walked, that infuriatingly cocky grin back on his face.
"Don't flatter yourself. I just wanted to shut you up. And maybe see if there's anything more to you than strutting around being a cocky bastard."
"Awh Cas, you're makin' me cry over here. Don't worry, I got depth, baby. I'm a fucking ocean."
Cas rolled his eyes on cue. Who said shit like that? But he couldn't stop a little smile from slipping across his face.
"Alright Cas, let me introduce you to the love of my life, Baby, Baby, Cas" Dean patted the hood of the car gently as they both got in.
"You named your car Baby?" Cas smirked at him, looking around at the interior. It was a pretty beautiful machine, Dean obviously took very good care of it.
"Yeah, so what? What kind of name is Castiel anyway?" Dean grumbled as they drove off.
"Well, my Dad is the local pastor and my Mom is very religious as well. So all of us are named after angels."
"An angel, huh? Suits you, darlin'" Dean looked over at him and winked.
Cas blushed deeply, looking out the window to hide his face and making Dean chuckle.
"So where are we going anyway?" he said, trying to change the subject.
"We're stopping by this little diner by Main, Harvelle's. They have the best bacon cheeseburgers and it would be a sin if I didn't take you to try them. You like burgers don't ya?"
"Of course. Like would be an understatement."
"Yeah?" Dean beamed, eyes going all crinkly and Cas felt his heart squeeze a little.
When they got there, Dean got out first and told Cas to wait in the car.
"I'll be right back, I'm just grabbing the food. We're going somewhere a little more private."
Private. Cas's heart sped up at the thought of everything that implied. He was surprised at how much he was enjoying himself already, and they hadn't even done anything yet. Dean was cocky sure but he wasn't as much of an asshole as he thought he was. He was, god forbid, maybe even a nice guy when he wasn't trying to look cool.
He looked up when he heard the door open. Dean got in, closing the door behind him and dropping a bag and a tray with two shakes in Cas's lap.
"Hold those. Alright, you ready to be blown away?"
