i've been watching mark play subnautica. he made it a surprisingly meaningful play through. he said goodbye to everything and everyone before he left, he lingered in the sea emperor's containment area, he did everything he could to protect his cyclops and seamoth and prawn suit, even knowing he could make new ones. he felt guilty for using cheats, restarted the game three times to make the 'right' gameplay... and he was just so excited and awed by everything the developers put into the game. even though he is absolutely terrified by the ocean, he didn't play the game like a horror game (which is how i've viewed up until now) because he recognized that ultimately, the game isn't a horror game. it's a survival game. i've been terrified of going into the dark and the depths in that game for a long while now. i'm scared of deep water and large predators and underwater caves. i've heard too many horror stories about the ocean. but subnautica isn't a horror game. it's a survival game, it's a tragic tale of a lone survivor on a decimated planet. it's the story of a mighty empress who held strong for her people until someone came to save them. it's the story of a species who was nearly driven mad in their search for a cure. it's a tragedy, but it is not a horror. thanks, mark. maybe i'll actually beat it soon. because i do love it.
