bucky  remained  silent  ,  his  eyes  dark  for  a  long  MOMENT  &&  then  glancing  down  at  the  brunette  .  things  had  come  a  long  way  since  the  40′s  . things  in  the  air  -  things  in  the  sky  now  weren’t  just  from  humans  .  weren’t  just  from  others  WAGING  WAR on  each  other  .  there  were  things  in  the  sky  that  were  alien  .  that  were  dangerous  .  that  were  a  means  that  he  would  always  have  to  fight  against  .  his  neighbors  already  didn’t  speak  to  him  .  not  that  he  BLAMED  them  .  

“  try  not  to  look  at  the  sky  then  .  ”  he  said  .  “  if  your  primary  concern  is  your  neighbors  not  talkin’  to  you  .  can’t  imagine  that’s  too  much  of  a  problem  though  .  

“I find your lack of verve disturbing.” it had been quite awhile since she’d seen bucky. never mind talked to him. she squinted up at him and took in the slightly too rigid posture. she exhaled a silent sigh. 

“there’s still more to life than staring at the sky waiting on the next alien invasion. sometimes it’s nice to just remember that there are still stars up there that are worth looking for regardless of portals or spaceships--that’s all I’m trying to say.”

She was already having a long day even before she’d gotten the message about his recent absconding. Peggy swore under her breath as she realized just exactly which Bucky had managed to unearth.

Thankfully by now, Peggy knew him well enough to track him down and she found him with the file open in his hand. In it, she knew there were plenty of awful words and if he couldn’t suss out just what the medical terminology meant, there were handy photographs of now ancient and healed injuries before they were either ancient or healed.

Peggy approached, making noise intentionally so he’d know she was there. She sat carefully, ignoring the first instinct to sit right by his side, mindful he might not want her there just yet. Peggy wet her lips before she spoke. “I assume by now I don’t have to remind you that it wasn’t in your control.” She kept her voice light, watching his face. “You were every bit the victim as I was.”

That had taken time--and, if she were honest, loads of therapy--to work through, especially right after they’d managed to capture the Winter Soldier and she set her organization’s sight on rehabilitation instead of retaliation for the attempted assassination. “I didn’t mean for you to find out this way,” she whispered. After a moment, Peggy touched his wrist. “You fought the orders every step of the way. It was the reason I survived.”

SHE GIVES THIS WORLD all she has to have offer. Not a day concludes without her attempting to bring light to a world so caught in the dreary clouds. Despite this, carnage terrorizes another town, another city, another country each day. War is like the heads of the hydra. Vanquish one only for more to replace it instantly. Her stomach is sick with the notion that humanity’s heart is darkening with every passing morning. It seems more certain than a promise, that the darkness is winning against the dawn. Bucky helps, though. Whether he knows it or not, he helps her to remember that Mankind, at its core, is made of goodness. Of hope. He, too, seems to give all he has to offer. Even when there is nothing left. 

The sunlight catches in Diana’s black hair as she walks slowly to stand beside Bucky. A rare moment that almost, almost resembles peace. She lets the silence linger until the thoughts spill onto her tongue.

Liza had woken up especially early-- mostly so that she could be extra sure she’d be up before Bucky, but also so that she could get a big breakfast thrown together for them. Muffins, pancakes, bacon, eggs, the whole nine yards. He never made a big deal about hs birthday, but she couldn’t wait to see his reaction to what Charlotte had planned. Granted, Liza wouldn’t see it until later, but still. He was going to love it.

She heard the kids wake up first, Alex bringing her brother down to see what their mom was up to in the kitchen. Seeing what time it was, Liza decided that she’d take one of the muffins up to Bucky-- or rather, she’d let Alex carry the muffin upstairs while she carried Matty.

Nudging the bedroom door open, Alex bounded in and set the muffin on the table beside the bed before jumping on her dad. “Dad! Wake up, it’s your birthday!” Alex said, hopping on the bed and causing Matty to sqirm from Liza’s arms, allowing him to join his sister. All Liza could do was stand there and watch as the kids tortured him.

I wish I’d known it was so easy to put you in a good mood - I’ll add jerky to the grocery list.”
