Easy riding
It’s been my experience that, generally speaking, bikes and beaches don’t mix; sand is just too soft to ride on.
Not here, where the Atlantic Ocean, with it’s ebb and flow, has sculpted an ideal bike path - 12 miles long and a quarter-mile wide at low tide.
The sand at the water’s edge is packed so densely that bike tires barely scratch the surface; it’s like riding on asphalt.
There’s another good reason why biking just may be the most popular activity here: the topography. It’s no accident Hilton Head Island and the surrounding area is called “the Low Country.” The highest point on the island is a mere 25 feet above sea level.
A single gear on your bike is all you’ll ever need.
