Le guitariste texan n’a pas attendu que les relations se normalisent à nouveau entre Washington et La Havane pour s’intéresser à la musique cubaine. En vérité, il y a été exposé dès la fin des années 60, le temps d’une initiation aux percussions latino avec rien moins que Toto Puentes, le légende du mambo. D’une certaine manière donc, il renoue avec ses jouets d’antan comme d’autres redécouvrent dans le grenier familial leurs vieux Playmobil et en avant les histoires ! Entre reprises– Slim Harpo, Otis Redding, Four Tops, Lightnin’ Hopkins – et compositions chantées en espagnol (avec souvent beaucoup trop d’effets sur la voix), congas, orgue B3, timbales, maracas viennent faire la nique à la guitare du barbu. On en sourit, s’en amuse, s’en désole parfois (le n’importe quoi n’est parfois pas loin).
