When I first heard the term ‘performance writing’ in class, Yuki Kihara’s last dance first came to mind. I thought this may fit into a form of performance design because she’s using her body to draw a message forth from herself. In my perspective she draws a memory, a specific time, a feeling of longing, reconnection. She uses one source of light from a low angle to cast a large scale of her shadow onto the wall creating a sense of mystery, darkness and provoke an imagination of the viewer. I think its a celebration because these senses/feelings that are other than the happy-go, easy going Samoan people who are generally perceived as are often forgotten in the back of Samoan culture and in this situation are brought forward to light.
