I'm trying to get my first grown up office job. I need a perfume (or perfumes, go nuts) that says "I am a Real Adult" without making me smell like my mom or costing me my whole paycheck.
For surprisingly different and sophisticated on a budget, I would actually recommend the perfume I wore all the time before wearing perfume became like, A Thing for me: Pure Grace, by Philosophy. You can get two ounces of it for under forty bucks without even trying hard, it doesn’t smell like candy or old ladies, but it also is extremely polite – I know nurses who wear this stuff on duty. Even people who are sensitive to fragrances (always a concern in your first office job, right?), are often pretty okay with Pure Grace. It’s a clean and extremely true-toned lavender and musk scent (emphasis on the musk though – it’s kind of like soap-and-pants) that dries down to a spicy, powdery base that you’ll still smell on your hair when you wake up the next day (I definitely recommend wearing it a couple days in a row – it layers over itself nicely, especially in the winter, when it will cling to your scarf and coat and such). It also comes with reasonably priced shower gels and such if that’s your jam.
If your self-image is a little more classic, I would get yourself over to sephora and sniff all of the Tocca bottles until you find one that strikes your fancy. They’re also pretty reasonably priced, and are mostly complex, romantic florals with a pretty low sillage (again, good for not pissing off everyone in your new office). They’ve all got super dramatic, feminine names too, which actually should be totally irrelevant but somehow is not. I like Violette, personally (although Tocca scents generally don’t have enough volume for me).
