Where’s that text post that’s like “Wilson is kind, gentle death and House is rough, painful life” because first of all, GO OFF; second of all, I have more to add:
House is justice; Wilson is clemency.
House is harsh truth; Wilson is comforting lies.
House is abrasive idealism; Wilson is resigned realism.
House is spiky vulnerability; Wilson is velvet guardedness.
House is constructive cruelty; Wilson is destructive kindness.
House is focused passion; Wilson is diffuse romance.
House is a gleeful perpetrator; Wilson is a willing victim.
hi again! if this hasn’t already been asked, what are your top ten memorable/happy moments!
Ahhhhhhhhh, this is actually harder than I thought. Some I am too sensitive to say because they are just for me. Also, there's the classic thing where I'm asked something that should be easy and I can suddenly think of nothing. But I will try! These may not be the top 10 best all time, but they are all at least close.
Behind a cut because this will probably be long.
Listed by number but not actually ranked. Really just numbering to keep track.
Also, this got really long, so you don't have to read all this or anything. This is just doing me doing an old thing and talking forever about past memories.
1. This isn't one particular memory but more of a collection of them. Basically, my mom introduced me to a lot of classic comedy movies: Clue, Airplane, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and others. I remember watching all those for the first time and specific moments where we laughed together. She had a laugh that kinda sounded like a goose. I can hear it when I think of those movies.
2. OK something a bit less sappy! Hockey memories! I think my favorite season ever was my first winter league at the bantam level. So many little happy memories so I will just say my first big hit. I was hesitant to hit, I guess it was something I wasn't used to in sports (this was my first contact sport). But one of the assistant coaches kinda hockey adopted me and made the time to kinda motivate me to get aggressive and really check someone. If he was in view and I was coming up on a big hit opportunity, I could see him get all hyped up. When I would pull up he would yell "AHHHH HIT EM" in a way that was weirdly motivating. Anyway, my first hit was perfect. I was coming up to hit a defensive lineman right before he passed the puck, I knew I timed it right to hit him just as he passed it. This time I didn't pull up, I just legally checked him backwards onto his ass and he slid backwards across the blue line. I looked up at my adoptive hockey dad immediately after, and he yelled "YEAHHHH" so loud the whole rink could hear it. I felt so proud in that moment!
3. The first time I really kissed a girl. Not like a between friends thing or a dare or something, but a proper kiss. I met her through my school's LGBTQ group my freshman year of college. I actually started talking to her via AIM or whatever was the thing in the mid 2000s. Anyway, I found out she lived in the towers, which were across the street from my college apartment. We figured out that her window was just in view of mine and we tested it by flashing our overhead lights to see if we could actually see each other. This was kinda the ice breaker haha. We got to know each other and one day I invited her to watch a DVD with me at my place, not as a date but sort of as one? I was soooooo nervous and awkward, I had no idea how to approach her in a more romantic way, like why not just talk about it? Instead I kinda awkwardly put my arm around her shoulders, not to like touch her boob or anything, I just really felt like I only had 2 brain cells working and that was all I could think of. But she thought it was funny cute and she kissed me, and my mind broke further so it probably wasn't very good on my end. But still, it gave me crazy butterflies in my stomach like no one's business. When I think of flashing room lights, I think of her.
4. The first time I made my current girlfriend laugh. We were still getting to know each other and it was the first time I, idk, the first time I felt she understood me on a deeper level. It was kind of an awkward thing where I misunderstood something she said and then I made a stupid little joke to cover for my awkwardness but my stupid little joke really got her and she literally lol'd. It was very warm and nice. But this is mostly a just for me thing so I will stop there haha.
5. When I was studying abroad in England, I instantly became friends with my flatmates and we would spend just about every evening together in the common room or at the pub. I remember early on asking if they had any pub songs and they laughed and told me no, but they had others. Those others were mostly random dumb songs from 80s and 90s, mixed in with some stuff from 2000s. And we would drunkenly sing these songs on the walk back from said pub. I can't remember them all but there was some Ace of Base, Tainted Love, and America, Fuck Yeah. It was always so funny to me. I really partied too much in England, my sister always says I got my degree in booze there. God it was fun though.
6. Another sports memory! My first long ball in softball. I played from the age of like 7 to 15. I was a solid hitter and I had a good arm, and in my last year I felt like I really had perfected my swing. I was at the batting cages all the time, to the point where I had to wear gloves every time I was at bat due to blisters. I also was doing some weight lifting at school, and that year I just felt the power behind my swing like never before. It was a hot summer day when I hit the big one, clearly blue skies too. I was used to hitting the ball into the outfield but not like this. The pitch came and everything just slid perfectly into place, the timing, the speed and placement, my stance and my swing. I fucking nailed that ball, the farthest I had ever seen one hit in our softball league. It wasn't just far though, it was high as hell. For a second I thought it might go over the fence but no, although it did roll up to the fence. We played on a regular size field so that was still pretty damn far, far enough for me to drive in 2 runs and get an inside the park homer. Not the first one ever in the league but my first one. The happy moment for me was seeing that ball absolutely fly. I did that at the cages but never in a game, and it was fucking glorious. I remember tracing it across the blue sky. Totally worth my arthritic shoulder now, just for that beautiful hit.
7. I guess I will say my birthday a couple years ago. I was a little more flush with cash, so I decided to do a little road trip circuit over to Gettysburg, then over to the coast, then back home and cutting through a national park. I went with my sisters and saw some beautiful stuff. We also ate so much good food, and the best poutine I ever had. I also got to get a personal tour with a park historian and I did my reading beforehand so we had SO much to talk about. Gettysburg is also beautiful despite being the site of a massive battle. We had a hotel room on the beach and every day and night I got to stare at the ocean. Sunrise, sunset, and a nightime thunderstorm over the ocean. I also got to cross the New River Gorge off my bucket list. Pictures included all from moments of peace:
8. A year or two before covid and all that, my best friend invited me to a bonfire at her friend's farm. A bunch of our mutual friends showed up and we ended up spending hours by the fire just telling funny stories and talking about old times. I caught up with some people I hadn't seen in a while. Smoked a fair amount of grass too. Her friend has a beautiful little farm surrounded by a forest. The autumn air mixed with the bonfire was just right. For a while, their barn cat sat on my lap. Just complete warmness on the inside and out. I think we sat out there just hanging out for like 5 hours. It was just so nice and such a wonderful break from the stress of life. Like it filled up both my happiness and my social meters. A perfect evening.
9. When I was a kid/teen one or my older sisters worked at a theater. Which meant I could see just about any movie any time. I spent so many hours at that theater. I'd go with friends to premieres and score us all tickets. We watched several horror movies that way, along with all of the Lord of the Rings movies. I'd skip school on occasion just to go to the movies with my sister. I got to go up in the projection booth (when they still had film) and see how it all worked. My sister and I watched The Fellowship of the Ring so much we had whole parts memorized. For a long time I could quote Boromir's entire Mordor speech. We watched it so much certain words and looks from actors would just crack us up. Some of my best movie memories were from that time.
10. The first time I rode a roller coaster. I was in middle school and our orchestra went down to this city with an amusement park for a competition. No one gave a crap about the competition because the rest of the day we got to the park. We finished as soon as we could, then we had to pick a buddy to go around with so I went with my friend. I was afraid of roller coasters but my friend loved them and she convinced me to try a tame one. I ended up loving it, so we progressively tried scarier and scarier ones. It was a weekday during the school year so the crowd wasn't bad, which meant I got to try almost every one. It was a complete blast and my favorite school trip ever.
Ok this was a lot and I feel a tad exposed, but it was also nice to think of these nice memories before bed. So thank you! You are very kind!
I’m disappointed there wasn’t a Tumblr wrapped/year in review this year because I feel like I’ve been so much more unhinged than last year. I want to see the data.
