Mahakarya Dimitri Gutas: Ibn Sīnā dan tradisi Peripatetik

Mungkin buku ini adalah buku paling penting untuk dibaca sebelum melakukan kajian apapun mengenai Ibn Sīnā. Namun, karena filosof ini adalah filosof paling menentukan dalam sejarah filsafat Islam/Arab, maka wajib juga karya ini dibaca sebelum ada yang melakukan riset apapun mengenai tradisi filosofis ini. Mungkin terkesan berlebihan, namun ada justifikasinya: buku Dimitri Gutas ini 1) mengkaji perkembangan filsafat Ibn Sīnā dengan membahas latar belakang historis setiap teks yang ditulis oleh al-Shaykh al-Raʾīs, 2) melacak secara komprehensif sumber-sumber historis dalam tradisi Peripatetik-neoplatonis yang menentukan bagi doktrin-doktrin Avicennian dan metodologinya, 3) menerjemahkan pendahuluan yang ditulis oleh Ibn Sīnā sendiri di awal kitab-kitabnya, 4) menerjemahkan dan membahas informasi biografis dan otobiografis mengenai perkembangan karir filosofis, metodologis dan doktrinal dalam filsafat Ibn Sīnā, dan 5) melakukan kritik terhadap pendekatan studi filsafat Islam/Arab pada abad ke-20 yang salah tafsir dan ideologis dan/atau keliru secara metodologis. Buku ini adalah ilmu alat utama dalam kajian filsafat Islam.

The second edition of this foundational work, which has quickened fruitful research into the philosopher in the last quarter century, is completely revised and updated, and adds a new final chapter summarizing Avicenna's philosophical project. It is also enlarged with the addition of a new appendix which offers a critical inventory of Avicenna's authentic works, updating the work of Mahdavi (1954) with additional information on all manuscripts and important editions and translations. Its usefulness enhanced, the book provides primary orientation to Avicenna's philosophy and works and constitutes an indispensable research tool for their study.'
