The highway’s white striped lines were beginning to grow hypnotic on Charlie’s tired eyes. He looked over at the passenger seat and saw Sam smiling at him, but her eyes seemed tired too. “It’s getting late," Charlie said, hoping conversation might keep him alive any. “Think we’ll get to that motel soon?" “I’m sure," Sam said. But she didn’t look to the map. That wasn’t a good sign. “I feel like I’m going to fall asleep behind the wheel," he admitted, his eyes back on the cumbersome road. “You could turn up the radio," Sam said. “No," he said, “No, it’s okay." Truth was he knew the particular mixed tape that was in the player so well that he barely heard it even if it were cranked. “I just need something to distract me." “We could play a game," his road trip sidekick offered. He smiled a little at her efforts and asked her what she had in mind. “Oh, anything. Zitch-dog or punch buggy? Yellow car?" “Those only work if there are any dogs or Volkswagens or yellow cars around," Charlie said. He wasn’t trying to be difficult. He shot her an apologetic glance. “I Spy?" she offered. “Alright," he said. It’s something. And they played I Spy for a good long while, but even with that after another hour Charlie was fighting a losing battle against his eyelids. “I’m really afraid of falling asleep here, Sam," he said. “How much longer until that motel?" “Just a short while now… Want to play another game?" “I don’t know if it’ll help," he said. “Depends on the game, doesn’t it?" “Not I Spy again, please." “Okay, okay," she giggled. “How about this… I’ll tell you something and you imagine it? Then you say what you’d do." “Okay," he said, interested. “Alright. First one, you’re alone on the street walking home and some big scary guy is following you." “I’d duck into the nearest store until he left." “Nice. Alright, you realize you forgot to read a chapter in a book you have a test on next period." “I guess I’d skim it in the class before and hope for the best." “Right," Sam laughed. “So…" she stopped and thought a moment. She could tell that even the brief pause was giving Charlie every chance to lose consciousness. “Okay. So you’re in the car with your girlfriend on an impromptu road trip, and you’re about to fall asleep before you get to the motel, when she leans in and tells you what you two are going to do when you get to the hotel room." Charlie raised his eyebrow but kept his eye on the road. Sam giggled and reached over to whisper in his ear. His eyes went wide as her words sunk in, and with new enthusiasm he stomped on the gas.
