‘    you’ve   reached      spencer  --    ‘     again & again    her    voice   repeats  the  same  old  LOOP ,  leaving him   at a  cliff  -  hanger !!     of  course,   he’s    seen   what   happened ;   his   eyes  not leaving   CHANNEL 4 NEWS    ever  since   they    mentioned   the  word   ‘ rosewood ‘.     a    girl  shot,   gasping   for   BREATH    --    holding   on      to    life   as   best   as   she  could ;    a   girl   --   the    woman   he  loves on the brink  of   DEATH.     

his   hand    remains   tight  around  his   phone ;   he wasn’t sure  what he’s  expecting  --  her  to  CALL  BACK  ?   tell him it  was  one  MISUNDERSTANDING,   a  joke  gone  wrong.       or   for   aria   or  hanna   or   emily  to  call  to  let  him   know   if  &  when  there’d  be a  memorial service.      PLEASE  SPENCER   !!   please  do   not  give  up.   i  need  you.   it’s   words   he  wishes   she  could  hear  now  --     words   he   could  never   say  out  loud.   words   he   couldn’t   say,    because     anyone   who  gets  TOO   close    ends   up    in    danger’s  way.                                                    but       honestly,   who’s   he   keeping   safe    now  ?   

first       mistake  ?    letting    her   think   she    was   UNWANTED    &   letting   her   slip   away  ;   only   to  fall  right back   into  the  hands of   A.       --   i’m   so   sorry.           it’s   TOO   late.      they’re  too    late.   a  fairy - tale    that  could  never   happen.        he   DIALS   again ,    only   to   hear    the  greeting   that’s  now  memorized,  but   he  doesn’t   hang    up   this  time  &  instead    awaits  the  BEEP.  

‘      hey,   spencer.         it’s   me,     but    you ..   already  know   that.    look,    call  me  as soon as  you  can.  i  wanna   come   up  &  visit.   ---    hey   spencer,   i’m  sorry.   for   everything.    i   shoulda   been  honest.  i ---   ‘    

&     before    he   could   conclude  the   message   with   the  last  two  words  he  should have  said  long  ago   i  love you.     the    message    cuts   off.       although   hard  to  admit,     he’s   scared  to  be  alone --   so  his  fingers    dance    across  the  keypad.  

(     text    message   sent   --   ELENA    ):      just  got your voicemail. i’m watching the news right now. are you coming home anytime soon? i was thinking we could binge-watch parks & rec.

  she’d  been  in  jail  for  over  a  month  and  was  finally  starting  to  find  her  feet . when  she’d  first  arrived  it’d  been  like  entering  a  whole  new  circle  of  hell,  the  other  inmates  were  rough , sometimes  even  cruel  (  she  bore  the  bruises  to  prove  it   )  she  was  a  pretty  young  blonde  and  everyone  knew  her  story . becoming  a  target  was  a  given  but  alison  was  nothing  if  not  a  survivor , she’d  managed  to  keep  her  head  down  and  out  of  the  way  mostly  and  had  even  made  a  friend  or  two  that  helped  keep  her  out  of  trouble . though  as  her  fellow  inmates  hazing  began  to  relent  she’d  only  used  the  time  to  nurse  deeper  wounds . ones  that  stung  of  betrayal  and  tasted  of  resentment . they  had  put  her  here , her  friends . could  she  even  call  them  that  anymore ?

  laying  on  the  top  bunk  writing  in  a  new  journal  despite  the  nagging  feeling  she  should  kick  the  habit,  she  waited  for  her  new  cellmate  to  arrive.  she  hadn’t  been  told  much  about  them,  other  than  like  her  they  were  there  on  a  murder  charge.  ali  prayed  that  whoever  the  girl  was  she’d  just  leave  her  alone  so  they  could  co-exist  peacefully .

  reining  in  her  features  as  an  all  too  familiar  face  stepped  through  the  doors ,  ali  refused  to  allow  spencer  to  get  even  a  whiff  of  the  shock  or  concern  that  had  her heart  racing .  instead  sliding  on  a  mask  of  indifference  and  throwing  a  snide  comment  her  way  the  moment  they  were  left  alone  together .

     ‘ what’s  the  matter ,  Spence  ?  run  out of  people  to  point  the  finger  at  and  decide  to  turn  yourself  in  ?  ’
