Pantasilea intrigues me... Where did she come from? She's sometimes portrayed as Lucrezia's Spanish maid, sometimes as her black slave... And she was found dead after Perotto's affaire with Luc was found out! What do we know about Pantasilea? Which was her role while she was serving Lucrezia? Was she murdered? Why?
Unfortunately Pantasilea is another shadowy figury, anon. Marin Sanudo mentions her in his diaries, stating that her body was found with Perotto’s, and that’s all we know about her. It’s very possible that she was a simple maid or a slave because otherwise her family name would have been reported, I guess. She may well have been Spanish too, but Pantasilea was a fairly common name in Italy back then.
As for the murder, if she was killed with Perotto we can assume she was having Lucrezia’s back while she and Perotto were having their affair at the convent. But it’s all very speculative as usual :)
One question about "Borgia: Faith and Fear"... Is the timeline of Lucrecia's journey to a convent during her divorce, her pregnancy and Perotto's death correct? It is not how I had read in books. Which is the correct timeline of the divorce&Perotto years?
Hey anon! I’m not sure I remember precisely the timeline of the show, but it’s true that there were several things wrong with it.
Lucrezia retired to the convent of San Sisto on 6 June 1497, a few days after her father began to summon lawyers to divorce her from Giovanni Sforza (some say it was because she opposed said divorce). Perotto seems to have acted as a messenger between the pope and his daughter, going back and forth from the convent where she supposedly was or fell pregnant.
She was at San Sisto when Juan died (14 June), which is why she can’t have killed him, as the show suggests.
Perotto appears to have been killed on 8 February 1498, with the body being found on 14 February. Lucrezia can’t have seen anything being still at the convent, as she was also on 15 March 1498, when she is reported to have had the Infans Romanus. She must have come back home shortly afterwards, but her presence at the Vatican is documented from July of that year.
