Sketching with Words

I don’t usually post this kind of thing here, but I figured it’s a good topic to talk about because probably so many of us—including myself—have experienced it firsthand when it comes to communicating.

We have all been there: someone is talking, and instead of actually processing what they are saying, we are just waiting for our turn to speak—like we already know what to say even though we haven't gotten the full picture yet. We map out our response in our heads and just hit "send" on our vocal cords, then instantly realize we completely misread the room. That usually ends in misunderstandings.

Honestly, it's simple: if you don't listen first, you are highly likely to say the wrong thing, which almost always triggers unnecessary misunderstandings. When we speak without fully absorbing the other person's perspective, we are basically not responding to them—we are responding to a version of them we manufactured in our own heads. Listening isn’t just about being quiet; it’s about collecting the context before you actually build or say your reply.

As an artist, I like to think of communication the same way I think of drawing. You can’t rush straight into rendering the final, heavy ink lines without looking at your reference or doing a rough sketch first. If you do, the anatomy will look weird, the perspective will be entirely off, and the colors will just end up looking muddy. Listening is the sketch phase of a conversation. It gives you the guidelines, the boundaries, and the true shape of what the other person is feeling so your final words actually align with the truth.

Before we speak, we have to learn to observe and receive. Taking a brief pause to genuinely hear someone doesn't mean you are losing the conversation; it means you just care enough to make your words coherent. So, I honestly think we should start treating our conversations with a little more patience.
