My Personal Development & SWOT Analysis
Like I stated at the beginning of the year, I didn’t really do anything over the summer (2015) that was graphic design related to keep me motivated and interested for the second year, so I found it really quite difficult to get back into my studies and to enjoy it. I found that my briefs in the first semester for the main module weren’t very experimental, I generally stuck to using digital processes rather than the analogue ones I started to enjoy in the first year just because it felt like the easy way to get work done. When I got into my support module I did in the first semester ‘Packaging With Photography’, this changed as I really started to enjoy designing the packaging and was having fun taking risks.
Strengths:
As I started to take risks with the ‘Packaging With Photography’ brief, I realised that this outcome was one of my best yet purely down to me having fun with it. It’s definitely beneficial to break the rules and push the boundaries, even if the design ends up being really ‘out there’ and a bit too much, it can always be brought back to something more basic, rather than to start ‘basic’ from scratch.
This year, I feel like I have gained some better knowledge of the design programs and also just the basics of design. Being taught how to typeset was a very big part of my learning and also a really good skill to know as it will help me with every future project. Learning the basics of photography again was also so helpful, and really beneficial for basic shoots such as taking photos of my sketchbook to be used in my portfolio, which leads me on to my next point – sessions with Tim in InDesign have been extremely useful in the second semester and will allow me to create a professional looking online portfolio which I can send to potential clients or employees.
From writing a blog this year instead of keeping a journal, I feel like I have made better use of my research and I am definitely reflecting more to further this. I also feel as if I have gained more of an opinion than I used to have. Starting a blog was a really efficient way of reflecting on my studies and it wasn't too difficult to stay up to date with. I feel like I produced a lot more research this way to aid my design process.
Most importantly, I have found what I enjoy. I really enjoyed learning how to typeset and feel like editorial work is something I can see myself doing in the future, but I had the most fun with the packaging support module and will embrace this in my projects during this second semester. I have also found that I really enjoy research and can see why it’s useful to research at the start of a project rather than to add it all in at the end after the brief is complete.
Weaknesses:
For exhibitions, I only visited Somerset Houses’ ‘World Illustration Awards 2015′ and First Site’s ‘Artist Rooms – Hattie Stewart & Andy Warhol’, which isn’t brilliant as exhibitions and galleries are a really good source for research and would have influenced my work more if I had visited more – they also help with motivation as it can make you realise the type of work thats you can produce. The artist room with Andy Warhol was really influential for one of my current briefs as my influence is a pop artist Pauline Boty who worked at the same time as male pop artist Andy Warhol.
Opportunities:
I have only got involved with one live brief this year due to having a lot of other commitments but the brief I am involved with is really quite a big one. I am working on this along with two other students and our end goal is to produce a prospectus for 2017 for the faculty of creative arts at Colchester Institute. So far, we are producing material to promote the HE creative arts department for the end of year show, including a broadsheet and an invite.
Threats:
Time management is something I am still trying to get my head around, as I do still find it quite difficult to plan and manage my time and don’t always stick to my timetables. One thing I have learnt is to keep my studies and relaxation separate; I try not to do my work sitting in bed on my laptop and will instead sit at my desk or even go to the library, which I probably went to once last year and have been to many times this year.
I’m not entirely sure if I want to spend my future working full time as a graphic designer so I will consider doing a work placement in a graphic design agency over the summer as I don’t really know what its like and can’t see myself being sat at a desk for the rest of my life. Other than this, I will continue to work my two part time jobs (not related to graphic design) to save money for my future which could potentially give me more opportunities to travel and visit more galleries/exhibitions. My goal until then is to involve graphic design more in my everyday life, for example, on Instagram and reading blogs. I want to keep on top of things, stay motivated, work effectively and efficiently, and most importantly to enjoy it.
