十九世紀的愛德華金寶先生，他只是一位普通的主日學老師，他經常為他主日學班上頑皮吵鬧的孩子們頭痛與煩惱，他曾一度想放棄這班孩子，但他最終決定為他們禱告，並試著帶領每一位信主。班上有位孩子似乎不懂得什麼是福音，所以金寶決心去他工作的鞋店向他解說。在鞋店後面的倉庫架旁，金寶先生向這個孩子解說與耶穌基督建立個人關係的重要性，並帶領他悔罪禱告。

那位年輕人就是慕迪。那個星期六就在鞋店的倉庫內，慕迪接受了耶穌基督作他個人的救主。從此慕迪的一生影響了兩大洲的人歸主，他的講道帶領成千上萬的人信靠神。這是這個福音菜瓜藤故事的開始。

因慕迪之影響，另外有一個名叫查普曼的，他的心被神得著，並且成為一位大佈道家向數千人講道。有一天，在他的佈道會中，有位職業棒球員「桑第」受聖靈感動而歸主，並且決定放棄職業球員的生涯，加入查普曼佈道團成為一員。當查普曼接受一大教堂邀請成為駐堂牧師後，桑第就開始了他自己的佈道團。

又由於桑第之佈道，另一位青年人叫莫迪蓋韓悔改信主。他是位斯文、高雅、學者型的紳士，他租了一部運棺材的靈車到處遊行，以宣傳吸引人來聽道。

當韓先生來到北卡州的查洛佈道時，他宣稱知道當地高中的對街有一所名聲不佳的房子，他決定要去那裡開佈道會。一些男學生知道後，連中飯也顧不得吃，就蜂湧地去這所房子，準備在佈道會中搗蛋，其中包括一位比利，也就是後來舉世聞名的比利葛培理；也決定去看熱鬧。

那晚，葛培理被所聽的道吸引震懾住。他第二天再回去聽道，並接受呼召成為基督徒。葛培理成為全世界空前有名的佈道家。而這件驚人的連鎖事件，卻開始於一位母親及主日學老師的盡力作為。

美國芝加哥科學博物館裡有一個大棋盤，上面有六十四個方格子。第一個方格放一粒麥子；第二個方格放兩粒；第三個方格放四粒；第四個方格放八粒；以此類推，放到六十四格時，這些麥子可以覆蓋全印度，且高達四~五公尺。有人研究，要讓全世界的人歸主，可用兩種方法：一種是由一個很有能力的人，每天帶領一千人信主。以這樣的方式，需要一萬年以上的時間，才能讓全世界歸主。另一種是做好陪讀，每年陪一個人，使他每年也能帶領另一個人信主。如此不斷重覆下去，全世界歸主只要四十年的時間。

區永亮牧師曾認真地統計過說︰「最有果效的傳福音是向個人作見證，然後把人邀請到教會來。」假如一個禮拜我們向一個人作見證，一個月便有四個人聽到福音。保守估算，若一個月四人中至少有一人因我們心中盼望的緣由，受邀來到教會，其結果是︰十個月有十個人。假如有一人信主且留在教會，那麼約莫五、六年就有百萬人信主。

最近我思想這些事時，對神說：「我快要六十四歲了，未來五年假如神還允許我繼續服事，我的人生標竿就是百萬的靈魂、百萬的禱告、百萬的行善、百萬的合一。」
