So what happens to a brain on the Internet?
As discussed in class, your brain will remold itself into a new form that it is more compatible with Internet-mediated information, kind of like melted plastic. This assumption is based off of Plasticity, the idea that our brains are constantly changing.
Carr stated his point of view being that our minds aren’t necessarily changing, but evolving. Evolving in a way that allows us to adapt, thus losing excess traits along the way.
With the Internet, the spread of ideas are more current, allowing our brains to adopt and process information more quickly than before. The speed of which this information is transmitted (through social networking for example) can have a noticeable impact on society. It was mentioned in class if communication over the Internet can make us more democratic. Such as on Twitter, people see what others (like news outlets or companies) know or are doing and “retweet” it to their followers, making a democratic situation through voting. –Essentially because people are acting upon what they’ve read and not about what they have done themselves.
This new execution of democracy can be considered an evolution. However some believe that it is too early to be identifying anything as an evolution or to say that people’s brains are evolving with new technology. It essentially takes thousands of years for evolution to evolve, so to say that over the past decade or so people’s brains have evolved-through plasticity-to a point that is dramatically different than before doesn’t seem possible.
That’s maybe why some believe that our brains are simply adapting, not evolving.
When people connect, there is a purpose and properties that evolve (as mentioned on the TED video). People have adapted to keeping relationships on the Internet that transitivity has emerged being the capital form of connecting. Transitivity being if Person A is connected to Person B, who is connected to Person C, then Person A is inevitably connected to Person C.
It was interesting to explore in the TED video that the connection of these people are greater than the sum of their parts, thus creating a super organism. A super organism being a community that cannot be reducible to a single individual, and must be studied by looking at the collective, because “different social locations affect the structure of you life”.
Example being, in the TED videos it was mentioned that if you are with over-weight people, you chance of becoming over weight are greatly increased than someone who are connected to people that live an active lifestyle. That even if a mutual friend is over-weight your chances are still higher. It’s only until you get to the position of a friend’s friend’s friend’s friend(at least four connections) that you are no longer affected by that aspect of transitivity.
The reason being, is because you are far enough away that you do not consider that person’s activity as “the norm”. The norm being, of course, what is the acceptable standard is. This brings full circle back to our plastic minds: what is the norm? And who causes the changes that causes our minds to change? Why do we change? Are we naturally motivated to move forward?
In the TED videos it is said that we choose to go forward, to be connected, because “the benefits of living connected are better than the risks” and “social networks are fundamentally connected to goodness”.
The structure, the way people are connected matters because it affects our entire lives. So whether it’s our brains that adapt because of Plasticity or because of our transitive position: our brain the Internet is changing because there’s a desirable means of connectivity that causes us to want to change.
