In Chicago, in the O'Leary barn a fire started that would sweep through the heart of the city, 17,500 buildings, leaving a third of the city homeless, and killing more than 300 people. In Peshtigo, WI, a wall of fire driven by gale-force winds swept through the woods and into the town obliterating an area twice the size of Rhode Island and 12 towns. The flames were so fierce the true cost will never be known though the best estimate is 1,200 to 2,500 people. In Michigan the towns of Holland, Manistee, and Port Huron were engulfed along with the woods surrounding them killing between 500 and 1,000 people. It was the "Night America Burned".
