The Great Fires of October 8, 1871

October 8 is the anniversary of the Great Fires of the Upper Midwest. The Great Chicago Fire, that killed 300 people, completely leveled 3.3 miles of the city, and left over 100,000 homeless, is so famous that it completely overshadows the other immense fires that happened on the same day in Port Huron, Michigan, Holland and Manistee, Michigan, Door County, Wisconsin, and greatest of all the conflagrations, The Great Peshtigo Fire of Peshtigo, Wisconsin. The Peshtigo Fire is the deadliest wildfire in American history, destroying over 1,875 square miles, and killing between 1500 and 2500 people.

This publication,The Great Calamity!, prepared and published in 1871 by Alfred L. Sewell in Chicago, focuses on the Chicago fire, but also discusses “Other Great Fires of Modern Times,” and dedicates seven pages to “The Burning of Peshtigo.”
